Lavabit briefly allowing users to recover their data

Former users of the Lavabit encrypted email service that was shut down in August are being temporarily allowed to change their passwords and download copies of their data.

Lavabit, an email service founded in 2004, was abruptly shut down following pressure from the U.S. government to hand over user communications and the encryption keys used to secure them.

As a first step in the newly announced data recovery process, users will be allowed to change their account passwords during a 72-hour period that started Monday at 7 p.m. U.S. Central Time.

Users can change their passwords by accessing https://liberty.lavabit.com, a website that has a new SSL key, Lavabit's founder and owner Ladar Levison said Monday in a statement posted on a Rally.org page used to receive donations for the Lavabit defense fund.

"Following the 72 hour period, Thursday, October 17th, the website will then allow users to access email archives and their personal account data so that it may be preserved by the user," Levison said.

When the Lavabit shutdown was originally announced, Levison was vague about the reasons that prompted his decision, saying only that he was forced to choose between suspending operations or becoming "complicit in crimes against the American people."

He claimed at the time that he couldn't disclose the events that led to the decision because of laws passed by the U.S. Congress that made it illegal to do so.

However, at the beginning of October, after a number of redacted court orders and other documents became public, Levison was able to reveal that his decision came after the federal government, as part of an investigation into several Lavabit user accounts, requested "unfettered access to all user communications and a copy of the Lavabit encryption keys used to secure web, instant message and email traffic."

It's not clear what accounts the government was investigating, but former U.S. National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden, who leaked documents revealing the agency's broad electronic surveillance programs, reportedly used a Lavabit email address on at least one occasion.

"I simply couldn't operate Lavabit while my lawyers appealed the demand for our [Lavabit's] encryption keys without the government agreeing to provide the transparency demanded by my conscience," Levison said in October. "The ethical implications ultimately prompted my decision to suspend the [Lavabit] service."

These Cans Come With Their Own Built-In DAC

Audio Technica makes a wide range of high-end headphones that plenty of audiophiles keep plugged into a standalone digital-to-analog converter. Perhaps that’s why one of their new sets of cans comes with a DAC built into the ear cup.

The Audio Technica ATH-D900USB uses the same 53mm drivers and components as the analog, open-back ATH-D900. But what makes it special is the 24-bit DAC built into the left ear cup. Powered by Burr-Brown amplifiers and taking a Mini USB input, the ATH-D900USB is the first pair of cans with a built-in 24-bit DAC included in the actual headset. Most of the time, these headphones will be playing music through USB, so the built-in DAC can do the usual digital-to-analog dance as well as normalize volume. But if you wanted to use these cans as a traditional pair of analog headphones, it does accept a 3.5mm jack.

Not much else is known about the ATH-D900USB at the moment, including how they sound. But they should be available for purchase in late 2014 for ¥37,800, or about $385.

Twitter's losses mount ahead of IPO

NEW YORK (AP) — Twitter's losses are mounting as the online messaging service prepares to make its stock market debut.

A regulatory filing Tuesday disclosed the San Francisco company lost nearly $65 million during the three months ending in September.

That's the largest quarterly setback that Twitter has suffered during the past three years. Twitter lost about $22 million at the same time last year.

In a development likely to hearten prospective investors, Twitter's revenue more than doubled from last year to nearly $169 million.

But the company's rising losses could dampen some of the enthusiasm for Twitter's initial public offering. The IPO is expected to be completed next month, though the company hasn't set a target date.

Twitter ended September with 232 million active users, up from 218 million in June.

Donald Glover’s Hotel Stationary Rant

His career is on the rise, and Donald Glover seems to be struggling with all the pressures that come with his multiple careers.

The “Community” star posted a series of messages via Instagram on Monday (October 14), all handwritten on stationary from Marriott’s Residence Inn.

Donald penned, "I'm afraid my parents won't live long enough to see my kids," "I'm afraid people hate who I really am," "I'm afraid people think I hate my race," "I'm afraid people think I hate women," and, "I'm scared I'll never grow out of bro rape."

Additionally, Glover addressed his fledgling rap career and the misconceptions about his departure from his hit NBC television series- "I didn't leave Community to rap. I don't wanna rap. I wanted to be on my own. I'm afraid [Community creator] Dan Harmon hates me."

"I've been sick this year, I've seen a bunch of people die this year. This is the first time I've felt helpless. But I'm not on that.”
