Sandy Hook kids head to school for first time since attack

NEWTOWN, Connecticut (Reuters) - Hundreds of the children who escaped the harrowing attack on their elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, last month head back to classes on Thursday for the first time since a gunman killed 20 of their schoolmates and six staff members.

School officials are preparing for droves of anxious parents to join the fleet of buses carting children to a disused middle school in the neighboring town of Monroe. Chalk Hill Middle School, closed about a year and half ago, has been hastily refurbished in the three weeks since the December 14 attack and renamed Sandy Hook Elementary School.

With their children's safety foremost on parents' and officials' minds in the wake of the second-deadliest school shooting in U.S. history, the school has been outfitted with a new security system. Monroe Police Department officers will patrol the grounds, and all outside doorways and sidewalks will be under surveillance.

"I think right now we have to make this the safest school in America," Monroe Police Lieutenant Keith White said at a press conference on Wednesday.

Parents wishing to remain with their kids, ages 5 to 10 in kindergarten through grade 4, will be allowed to accompany them to their classrooms and afterwards may stay in the school's "lecture room" for as long as they like, according to a memo to parents on the school's website. Counseling will be available for students and parents at the new school, about 7 miles south of the scene of the shooting.

"I'm not sure I'm ready yet to totally let them go," Sandy Hook parent Sarah Swansiger said on CNN about her trepidation over the return to school.

When the students return around 9 a.m. Thursday, they will find all of the belongings they left behind when teachers and police evacuated them from Sandy Hook nearly three weeks ago after Adam Lanza burst through the school doors and opened fire.

They will be welcomed to a building that has been decked out as a "Winter Wonderland" with the help of thousands of kids from around the world.

"This does not look like the other elementary school," Newtown School Superintendent Janet Robinson said emphatically.

In the meantime, no new details have emerged to explain why the 20-year-old Lanza, armed with a semi-automatic assault rifle, two other firearms and hundreds of rounds of ammunition, targeted the school.

Described by family friends as having Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism, Lanza shot and killed his mother, Nancy Lanza, at their home about 5 miles from the school before driving to Sandy Hook and embarking on the massacre, police said. He then took his own life as police were arriving at the school, which had an enrollment of 456.

Police have offered no firm motive for the attack, and state police investigators have said it could be months before they finish their report.

The massacre in Newtown, a rural New England town of 27,000 residents about 70 miles northeast of New York City, stunned the nation, prompting President Barack Obama to call it the worst day of his presidency and reigniting an extensive debate on gun control. Obama has tasked Vice President Joe Biden with assembling a package of gun-control proposals to submit to Congress in the next several weeks.

The National Rifle Association, the most powerful gun-rights lobby in the United States, has rebuffed calls for more stringent firearms restrictions and instead called for armed guards to patrol every public school in the country.

Bieber calls for new laws after photographer is killed

Police in Los Angeles are investigating the death of a photographer who was hit by a car while trying to take pictures of a white Ferrari owned by pop star Justin Bieber. TODAY's Willie Geist reports.

Pop superstar Justin Bieber called for new laws cracking down on paparazzi Wednesday after a celebrity photographer was struck and killed by a passing motorist as he tried to shoot photos of Bieber's white Ferrari in Los Angeles.

The photographer, a man in his late 20s whom police wouldn't identify until they can notify his next of kin, was pronounced dead at UCLA Medical Center shortly after he was run over about 5:30 p.m. local time Tuesday, police said.?

Authorities confirmed that Bieber, 18, wasn't in the Ferrari. It was being driven by a friend, whom they wouldn't identify, and it wasn't involved in the accident, police said.?

Justin Bieber wasn't in the car at the time of Tuesday's incident, police said.

The incident took place after a California Highway Patrol officer flagged the Ferrari for speeding on the northbound lanes of Interstate 405, said Madeline Nightingale, watch commander of the Los Angeles Police Department's West Traffic Bureau. The car then exited at Sepulveda Boulevard and Getty Center Drive, she told NBC News.

During the traffic stop, the photographer crossed the busy Sepulveda thoroughfare, which runs parallel to the 405, and tried to shoot photos of the vehicle's occupants from a perch on the narrow divider, she said.

The Highway Patrol officer on the scene repeatedly warned the man that his position was dangerous, she said. The man was then struck by a car traveling southbound on Sepulveda, Nightingale said.

No charges were expected to be filed against the motorist, who stopped and tried to administer assistance, Nightingale told NBC News. The driver was a woman with two young children in the vehicle, Nightingale said.

Thibault Mauvilain, a celebrity photographer who went to the scene of Tuesday's accident, told reporters that he knew the photographer who was killed.

"He always played by the rules. I'm not aware of him doing anything illegal," Mauvilain said, according to NBC 4 of Los Angeles.?

"Some people will say he's just another crazy paparazzo trying to make the money. Actually, he was not a paparazzo. He was just another kid from New Mexico."

In a statement Wednesday, Bieber said: "While I was not present nor directly involved with this tragic accident, my thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim."

In fact, California had such a law until just a few weeks ago.

In 2010, the state cracked down on paparazzi, adding extra penalties for photographers who drive dangerously in pursuit of pictures they intend to sell.?

But in November ? in a case also involving a photographer who was hoping to get pictures of Bieber at a traffic stop ? a Superior Court judge struck down the law on constitutional grounds.

The behavior of celebrity photographers has been widely denounced ever since 1997, when Princess Diana died in a French auto accident that was initially blamed on pursuing photographers. The wreck was subsequently blamed on Diana's driver.

But other celebrities have also been caught up in dangerous incidents involving paparazzi:

• In June 2011, Tori Spelling backed her car into the wall of her children's school in Tarzana, Calif., as she was being pursued by a photographer.

"Wht will it take?" Spelling tweeted at the time. "Someone dying for paparazzi to stop?"

• In October 2009, a car driven by Nicole Richie was rear-ended by a car carrying two photographers in Beverly Hills, Calif. The driver was arrested and found to have no driver's license.
• The same month, Brad Pitt was riding a motorcycle in Los Angeles when a photographer trying to get a picture rear-ended the actor with his car. Pitt and the motorcycle fell over, but he was uninjured.
• In 2010, a photographer claimed that he was badly injured when a car in which Lindsay Lohan was riding ran him over outside a Hollywood nightclub. The photographer sued Lohan in January 2011; Lohan asked a court to dismiss the suit last summer.
• In June, Lohan was involved in another crash when her rented Porsche ran into a truck in Santa Monica, Calif., while allegedly fleeing a pack of chasing paparazzi.

GREENSBORO, N.C. ? As Governor Bev Perdue finishes her last week in office as head of state, supporters of Janet?Danahey wait to hear whether Perdue will grant clemency in a ten-year-old Greensboro case.

Last June,?Danahey?s attorneys filed a petition for clemency, stating, ?This was a prank and everyone knew it. We are left with the unsettling and disturbing sense that we placed a 23-year-old woman in prison for life without parole for playing a prank that went terribly wrong.?

Danahey?confessed and pled guilty to four counts of murder and arson after she admittedly set a fire that killed four people in a Greensboro apartment complex in February 2002.

She was sentenced to life without parole and is currently imprisoned in the women?s prison in Raleigh.

Her attorneys maintain the fire was all part of a prank, a practical joke gone wrong, and insist she is remorseful.

?She never intended any harm to any human being. She attempted a foolish prank that put her in prison for life. It was a thoughtless act, but with no malicious intent,? wrote defense attorneys Locke Clifford and Wade Smith in the petition.

The petition also included more than 35 letters of support; one was from the father of one victim of the fire, Beth Harris.

The Governor has said she will rule on the clemency request. She would need to do so before the end of her term in North Carolina this week.

Since June, an online petition has also sparked supporters to step forward and share their perspective on the?Danahey case.

?Janet paid for the crime with ten years in prison,? wrote one supporter. ?She deserves to contribute to society again from the outside.?

Another signed the online petition, ?She is a good person. I think she made a mistake and is remorseful.?

Greensboro Firefighter David Douglas responded to the Campus Walk Apartment fire in 2002. He believes?Danahey deserves the life without parole sentence she agreed to ten years ago.

?You know, it?s a harsh sentence,? he told Fox 8 at the time.

?Well unfortunately being dead forever is a harsh sentence, too. All of those things they say Ms.?Danahey can?t do- none of those victims can do either.?

Investigators said?Danahey poured lighter fluid on a futon on her ex-boyfriend?s balcony and set the futon on fire. The fire quickly spread to the entire building.

Douglas was the person who informed Carolyn Llewellyn that her daughters, Donna and Rachel, were two of the four people killed in the fire.

?Of all the things I?ve ever done I think in my life, that was the hardest,? Douglas admitted.

Llewellyn also spoke to?Fox8 when?Danahey?s petition for clemency was first filed.

??When you lose a child to a crime, you never get to really bury them because the justice system doesn?t allow closure. It allows them to continue to be dug up over and over and it causes more grief for the loved ones.?

But Janet?Danahey?s loved ones say they are suffering, too.

One woman wrote on the petition that Janet was like a big sister to her growing up.

?She always brought a ray of sunshine every time she came over. I remember he beautiful smile and laugh with love. Janet is love.?

Guilford County Assistant District Attorney Howard Neumann painted a very different picture of?Danahey in response to the idea of commuting her sentence.

?It?s an intentional malicious act and the consequences of it are foreseeable.?

Many of?Danahey?s supporters believe this could be her last shot at a second chance.

Boosting galactan sugars could boost biofuel production

Galactan is a polymer of galactose, a six-carbon sugar that can be readily fermented by yeast into ethanol and is a target of interest for researchers in advanced biofuels produced from cellulosic biomass. Now an international collaboration led by scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) has identified the first enzyme capable of substantially boosting the amount of galactan in plant cell walls.

Unlike ethanol, advanced biofuels synthesized from the sugars in plant cells walls could replace gasoline, diesel and jet fuels on a gallon-for-gallon basis and be dropped into today's engines and infrastructures with no modifications required. Also, adanced biofuels have the potential to be carbon-neutral, meaning they could be burned without adding excess carbon to the atmosphere. Among the key challenges to making advanced biofuels cost competitive is finding ways to maximize the amount of plant cell wall sugars that can be fermented into fuels.

"We have confirmed the identity of the GT92 enzyme as the first enzyme shown to increase the biosynthesis of galactan," says Henrik Scheller, vice president for JBEI's Feedstocks Division and director of its Cell Wall Biosynthesis group. "This identification of the first ?-1,4-galactan synthase provides an important new tool for the engineering of advanced bioenergy fuel crops."

Scheller, who also holds an appointment with DOE's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab), is the corresponding author of a paper in the journal Plant Cell that describes this work. The paper is titled "Pectin Biosynthesis: GALS1 in Arabidopsis thaliana is a ?-1,4-Galactan ?-1,4-galactosyltransferase." Co-authors were JBEI's April Liwanag, Berit Ebert, Yves Verhertbruggen, Emilie Rennie, Carsten Rautengarten, and Ai Oikawa, plus Mathias Andersen and Mads Clausen of the Technical University of Denmark.

Galactans are polysaccharide components of pectin, the sticky sugar substance that binds together the individual cells in plant cell walls and is used to make jellies and jams. The ?-1,4-galactan component of pectin is especially abundant in the "tension wood" that forms in cell walls in response to mechanical stress from wind or snowfall.

"Galactans are composed of hexoses, which in contrast to pentoses, are easily utilized by fermenting microorganisms for the production of biofuels and other compounds," Scheller says. "It would be advantageous to develop plants with increased galactan content instead of hemicelluloses consisting largely of pentoses."

GT92 is a family of glycosyltransferase proteins whose genes are found in all plants that have been genetically sequenced. An increased expression of GT92 genes has been observed in studies of tension wood. This observation combined with the knowledge that tension wood is rich in ?-1,4-galactan led Scheller and his colleagues to investigate the function of GT92 proteins in Arabidopsis thaliana, a small flowering relative of mustard that serves as a model organism for plant studies. Arabidopsis has three members of GT92, which Scheller and his colleagues designated as GALACTAN SYNTHASE 1,2 and 3 (GALS1, GALS2 and GALS3). While loss-of-function mutants in all three genes were found to be galactan deficient, Scheller and his colleague isolated and tested GALS1.

"Overexpression of GALS1 resulted in plants with 50-percent higher ?-1,4-galactan content and no adverse phenotype," Scheller says. "We expect that the results for GALS2 and GALS3 overexpressors will be similar though we have yet to test them."

Given that all three Arabidopsis GALS genes showed overlapping but not identical expression, Scheller and his colleagues are now combining mutations of GALS genes to better understand the role of ?-1,4-galactan in plants. They're also carrying out basic studies on these enzymes, including crystallization and structural analysis. In addition, they're overexpressing the GALS proteins in different combinations to determine if even higher production of ?-1,4-galactan results.

"As ?-1,4-galactan is an ancient invention, the function of GT92 as a galactan synthase in Arabidopsis should also be applicable to switchgrass, Miscanthus, poplar and other plants being considered as crops for advanced biofuels," Scheller says. "We do not anticipate any difficulty in being able to overexpress GT92 genes in these plants."

New Kia Rio hatch launching in Malaysia next month!

It?s not a surprise that the third-generation Kia Rio is coming to Malaysia, but what?s less known is when exactly will it arrive. Unveiled at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, the Rio five-door hatchback has been spotted testing on our roads as early as March this year.

We also shared with you pics of taped up examples in July and earlier this month. Officially, Kia Malaysia teased the Rio with multi-colour stripes at the COTY2U Autoshow 2012.

Well, there?s not long left to wait now. The new Kia Rio will be launching in Malaysia in January 2013, which is just around the corner, according to our sources. The UB will be available here in five-door hatchback form, powered by a 1.4 litre MPI Gamma engine. The DOHC with CVVT unit makes 109 PS and 136 Nm of torque. A four-speed automatic gearbox is the drivetrain partner.

The B-segment Rio has grown, and the new one?s wheelbase has been extended by 70 mm ? to 2,570 mm ? while the boot carries a decent 288 litres. Exterior dimensions changes include an increase of 55 mm in overall length and 25 mm in overall width, though height has been reduced by 15 mm, which explains the sportier stance.

Both get LED daytime running lights, electric folding and adjustable wing mirrors with LED signal lamps, a stereo system with MP3/AUX/RDS/six-speakers, aluminium pedals, tilt/telescopic steering, leather wrapped steering with audio controls, Bluetooth, six airbags (front, side, curtain), ISOFIX and Vehicle Stability Management (VSM).

The higher SX spec car adds on front fog lamps, sunroof, Kia?s ?Supervision cluster? instrument panel, auto air-con with ionizer and Smart Key with push start button, making it very richly equipped for a B-segment car.

Those who apparently did receive this "revolutionary" product over the holiday season are burning up the Amazon reviews as 2012 draws to a close.?

Just read what these satisfied reviewers have to say over this demarcated banana shape that is "dishwasher safe" and "faster, safer than using a knife."

"No more winning for you, Mr. Banana!" declares the review voted "most helpful" by other Amazon's users. Same-sex marriage ceremonies begin in Maryland

BALTIMORE (AP) ? Same-sex couples in Maryland were greeted with cheers and noisemakers held over from New Year's Eve parties, as gay marriage became legal in the first state south of the Mason-Dixon Line on New Year's Day.

James Scales, 68, was married to William Tasker, 60, on Tuesday shortly after midnight by Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake inside City Hall.

"It's just so hard to believe it's happening," Scales said shortly before marrying his partner of 35 years.

Six other same-sex couples also were being married at City Hall. Ceremonies were taking place in other parts of the state as well.

The ceremonies follow a legislative fight that pitted Gov. Martin O'Malley against leaders of his Catholic faith. Voters in the state, founded by Catholics in the 17th century, sealed the change by approving a November ballot question.

"There is no human institution more sacred than that of the one that you are about to form," Rawlings-Blake said during the brief ceremony. "True marriage, true marriage, is the dearest of all earthly relationships."

Brigitte Ronnett, who also was married, said she hopes one day to see full federal recognition of same-sex marriage. Maryland, Maine and Washington state were the first states to approve same-sex marriage by popular vote, in November, a development Ronnett said was significant.

"I think it's a great sign when you see that popular opinion is now in favor of this," said Ronnett, 51, who married Lisa Walther, 51, at City Hall.

Same-sex couples in Maryland have been able to get marriage licenses since Dec. 6, but they did not take effect until Tuesday.

In 2011, same-sex marriage legislation passed in the state Senate but stalled in the House of Delegates. O'Malley hadn't made the issue a key part of his 2011 legislative agenda, but indicated that summer that he was considering backing a measure similar to New York's law, which includes exemptions for religious organizations.

Shortly after, Archbishop Edwin O'Brien of Baltimore wrote to O'Malley that same-sex marriage went against the governor's faith.

"As advocates for the truths we are compelled to uphold, we speak with equal intensity and urgency in opposition to your promoting a goal that so deeply conflicts with your faith, not to mention the best interests of our society," wrote O'Brien, who served as archbishop of the nation's first diocese from October 2007 to August 2011.

The governor was not persuaded. He held a news conference in July 2011 to announce that he would make same-sex marriage a priority in the 2012 legislative session. He wrote back to the archbishop that "when shortcomings in our laws bring about a result that is unjust, I have a public obligation to try to change that injustice."

The measure, with exemptions for religious organizations that choose not to marry gay couples, passed the House of Delegates in February in a close vote. O'Malley signed it in March. Opponents then gathered enough signatures to put the bill to a statewide vote, and it passed with 52 percent in favor.

In total, nine states and the District of Columbia have approved same-sex marriage. The other states are Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.
