PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] The surface of the giant asteroid Vesta is weathering in a way that appears to be completely different from any other asteroid yet visited, according to new data recorded by NASA's Dawn spacecraft. This new type of space weathering suggests that there's something about Vesta perhaps its mineral composition or its position in the solar system that makes its surface environment fundamentally different from other asteroids studied thus far.

The new data are presented in a paper published Nov. 1, 2012, in the journal Nature.

Space weathering is the term used to describe how the surfaces of airless bodies like asteroids and some moons change over time. The phenomenon was first identified on our own Moon. Soil ejected from fresh impact craters looks brighter than the surrounding background soil, often forming bright rays streaming away from the crater. It wasn't clear at first why newly exposed soil would look different.

As laboratory equipment improved, scientists eventually showed that soils darken over time on the lunar surface because they are exposed to a constant barrage of tiny meteorites as well as energetic particles from the sun known as the solar wind. As these materials interact with the surface, they produce a fine coating of metal nanoparticles that builds up on soil grains over time, darkening the soil. Deeply buried material lacks that coating, so when it's churned up by a large meteorite impact, it has a brighter appearance than the weathered soil.

This same type of space weathering involving metal nanoparticles was later found to occur on several asteroids as well.

"We thought we understood this pretty well," said Brown University geologist Carle Pieters, one of the original scientists to study the phenomenon. "That's space weathering." Or at least it was until the Dawn spacecraft showed that Vesta, one of the largest bodies in the asteroid belt, weathers in a completely different way.

As on the Moon, soil ejected from craters on Vesta looks different from background soil, so it's clear that some kind of weathering is taking place on Vesta. But using Dawn's visible and infrared spectrometer, Pieters and colleagues found that weathered soil on Vesta doesn't have any of the nanophase metal that characterizes weathered soil on the Moon and some asteroids.

"We know that the surface of Vesta is weathering," Pieters said, "but it can't be happening in the same way as these other bodies."

Weathering on Vesta appears to happen through meteorite impacts that mix soils mechanically, not through creation of the nanophase metals like on the Moon. "Think of it like throwing a rock in a sandbox," Pieters said. "You're not altering the sand in any fundamental way. You're just tossing it around."

The trick now is figuring out why the nanophase weathering so pervasive on the Moon doesn't seem to happen on Vesta. One possibility is that the meteorites hitting Vesta don't vaporize as they often do on the Moon, or perhaps the solar wind is too weak out in the asteroid belt, making the formation of nanoparticles less likely, Pieters said. The prevalence of mechanical mixing could have something to do with how the gravitational characteristics of Vesta allows particles to move or with Vesta's initial mineral composition.

"It could be a lot of things," Pieters said. "That's the next problem we're working on now."

Pieters also plans to go back and re-examine space weathering processes on the Moon and other asteroids.

"There are probably things we've overlooked on other asteroids because we've just been concentrating on the nanophase coatings," she said. "But Vesta has shown us that this mixing process is really very important."

Social factors trump genetic forces in forging friendships, study finds

ScienceDaily (Oct. 31, 2012) ? "Nature teaches beasts to know their friends," wrote Shakespeare. In humans, nature may be less than half of the story, a team led by University of Colorado Boulder researchers has found.

In the first study of its kind, the team found that genetic similarities may help to explain why human birds of a feather flock together, but the full story of why people become friends "is contingent upon the social environment in which individuals interact with one another," the researchers write.

People are more likely to befriend genetically similar people when their environment is stratified, when disparate groups are discouraged from interacting, the study found. When environments were more egalitarian, friends were less likely to share certain genes.

Scientists debate the extent to which genetics or environmental factors -- "nature" or "nurture" -- predict certain behaviors, said Jason Boardman, associate professor of sociology and faculty research associate with the Population Program in CU-Boulder's Institute of Behavioral Science. "For all the social demographic outcomes we care about, whether it's fertility, marriage, migration, health, it's never nature or nurture.

"It's always nature and nurture," he said. "And most of the time it has a lot more to do with nurture."

Boardman's team included Benjamin Domingue, research associate in the Population Program at IBS; and Jason Fletcher, associate professor of health policy at the Yale School of Public Health. Their research was recently published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Early last year, PNAS published a study reporting evidence that certain shared genes might determine peoples' choice of friends. Time magazine dubbed this "friends with (genetic) benefits."

Boardman is a sociologist who spent five years studying genetics at CU-Boulder's Institute for Behavioral Genetics to bring insights of the social sciences to the natural sciences. He observed: "You can't understand the spread of health behaviors -- why people smoke, why they drink, why they may or may not be obese -- unless you understand their genetic liability and also place them in the right social context."

The research team used data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. Boardman's team focused on 1,503 pairs of friends in seventh through 12th grade in 41 schools. As with the earlier study, Boardman's group found that some pairs of friends shared certain genetic characteristics.

The team tested the evidence, arguing that if genes were the driving friendship factor, genetically based friendship should emerge most often and easily in schools with the least amount of social friction. "But we found the exact opposite," he said.

In the most socially equal environments, genetic homophily (or love of the same) was "pretty weak," meaning that friends were less likely to share genetic traits. He added, "It was in the most unequal social environments that we saw the highest level of genetic homophily."

In a socially stratified school, "Students from different populations within the school may be effectively 'off limits' for friendships," the team wrote.

While applauding the revolutionary advances in genetics in recent years, Boardman said "we have to have social scientists at the table, because we're the ones with the data, methods and theories to characterize the multidimensional and multilevel nature of the social environment."

Scientists cannot fully understand heritable changes in gene expression unless they understand "what kind of schools people go to, what neighborhoods they live in" and other social factors, Boardman said.

"To me, to say whether genes predict friendships without understanding the context within which these friendships may or may not occur just doesn't tell the whole story."

Cloud Atlas | Movie Reviews | Kelly Vance | East Bay Express

In bringing author David Mitchell's labyrinthine Cloud Atlas to the screen, the directorial tag team of Tom Tykwer, Lana Wachowski, and Andy Wachowski was faced with narrative dilemmas revolving around the novel's length (509 pages), its frequently ornate language, and the complexity of its six interlocking plots. It's a pleasure to say the filmmakers not only solved the low overcast problem, but also that their collaboration is one of the few major releases of the season that lives up to its hype.

Don't worry about those six competing novella-size stories getting in each others' way. There's nothing here the mosaic-wise modern media audience can't handle. The best strategy is to relax, drink in the images, put your brain on cruise control (while still listening to the characters), and let the movie sort itself out.

Chronological order matters, at first. The anchor of the piece is the 19th-century tale of a writer whose chance acquaintance with a "savage" stowaway aboard a ship bound for San Francisco from New Zealand changes the history of the world. Then, advancing in time, we witness: a 1930s contest of wills between a young classical music composer and his tyrannical employer, a crotchety maestro; a reporter investigating a malevolent utility company in the 1970s-era Bay Area; the comic predicament of a man imprisoned in a senior living facility in 2012 England; the grim chronicle of a "fabricant" restaurant worker and her unlikely ally in mid-22nd-century Neo-Seoul, Korea; and, finally, a struggle between peaceful villagers and cannibals on the "Big Isle" of Hawaii sometime "After the Fall."

Instead of presenting each story as a discrete nugget, the co-directors interweave the events in a long, careful crescendo of crosscutting. It takes some getting used to, but we're shepherded by the recurrence of actors as well as by the continuity of Mitchell's persistent theme: rebellion against tyranny. The most compelling narrative centers on Sonmi-451 (played by South Korean actress Doona Bae), a disposable, semi-robotic restaurant waitress whose love story with a human named Hae-joo Chang (Jim Sturgess) awakens her conscience and her social responsibility as an Earth dweller.

As the stories unfold, Bae and Sturgess play multiple roles, as do Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Susan Sarandon, Hugh Grant, Ben Whishaw, David Gyasi, and James D'Arcy in the large cast. Hugo Weaving, nemesis of the Wachowskis' Matrix movies, sticks to villainous parts throughout (his Nurse Noakes is a wonderfully hideous piece of work), but Hanks, Broadbent, and Grant all cross back and forth from protagonist to antagonist, with elaborate changes of makeup.

And yet what we can only call the moral thrust of Cloud Atlas remains consistent. Mitchell's novel plays to the Wachowskis' and Tykwer's strengths as creators of characters in conflict with oppressive hierarchies ? check Run Lola Run, V for Vendetta, The International, etc. The lesson of all six fables: Don't be cowed by bullies and bosses. Link up with like-minded folks and resist. Make them pay. (We'd like to see these three filmmakers produce an intelligent screenplay on the Occupy movement. America's urban protestors appropriated the Guy Fawkes mask from V for Vendetta ? it's time to return the favor.) Other major threads: tattoos, masters versus slaves, the notion that women will not be denied, oceans and shores, violence, and reincarnation. Metaphors rebound on each other. The novel's lustrous prose survives in abridged form. The problem with most sci-fi is its limited ambition. Mitchell's fiction, however, has real substance and a beauty of language to go with its universal humanity.

Hanks' "Dermot Hoggins" cockney accent is awful, but his prosthetic overbite in the Dr. Henry Goose role is somehow ingratiating ? he seems to enjoy playing daffy characters. Ditto Broadbent the old pro, growling and whimpering. Grant's underhanded corporate technocrat Lloyd Hooks bears a disturbing resemblance to the Mittens. Berry convinces as the nosy magazine writer and also as the ultimate keeper of the Kona hearth. Whishaw and D'Arcy, playing unlucky lovers Robert Frobisher and Rufus Sixsmith, provide one of the keys that unlock the chain of coincidences.

Bae and Sturgess may be the unlikeliest of lovers, the subdued-but-studious clone and the guy in the fake-looking "oriental" makeup, but their adventures in the bowels of Neo-Seoul provide the necessary Matrix-style shootouts to go with the elliptical workings of Mitchell's time travels. The Wachowskis directed the two futuristic episodes plus the Adam Ewing sailing ship tale; Tykwer handled the composer, reporter, and old folks' jailbreak stories, and also composed the music score, including "The Cloud Atlas Sextet," Frobisher's elusive main musical cue. It's entirely possible to enjoy Cloud Atlas solely for its spectacular visuals and grandiose play-acting, but anyone wishing to get down to the heart of the myth has only to pick up on Sonmi-451's words: "Our lives are not our own. From womb to tomb we are bound together, past and present."

New insights into membrane-assisted self-assembly

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? How proteins and virus capsids -- complex protein structures that encase the genetic material of viruses -- form structures near to a fluctuating membrane is simulated by physicist Richard Matthews with advanced computational techniques.

Matthews performs research as a Lise-Meitner-Fellow in the Computational Physics Group of the University of Vienna under the direction of Christos Likos, professor for Multiscale Computational Physics. The results are relevant to the understanding of biophysical processes and appear in the current issue of Physical Review Letters.

"In our current paper we present new computational results that explore how membranes may influence crucial biological processes," explains Richard Matthews, Lise-Meitner-Fellow at the University of Vienna and first author of the study. The focus of the investigation is the self-assembly of microscopic particles, the formation of structures or patterns without human intervention. More specifically, the effect of the interactions between membranes and proteins, which can influence the formation of ordered structures in cells, is considered.

Self-assembly has become a hot topic in recent years. Many of the most astonishing examples are found in nature, from tiny motors (e.g. the flagellum motor) to virus capsids with perfect spherical forms. Many researchers have also tried to improve our understanding by representing the assembly of such structures with models. In order to gain clear insight it is preferable that these models are as simple as possible. This approach has been very successful in reproducing key features of experiments, whilst also uncovering new aspects. In reality, these processes do not occur in isolation and, in fact, many happen on, or in the vicinity of, membranes, a fact that has been previously neglected in the construction of simple models.

Advanced Simulation Techniques

The research aims to find out the general properties of these fascinating systems by applying state of the art simulation techniques. This requires everything to be calculated on a computer. Due to the complexity of the task, high performance computers are necessary. "In our work we have applied advanced simulation techniques, which allowed us to see how interactions with a membrane influence self-assembly," explains Richard Matthews. "We determined that membranes promote self-assembly and also find that our model reproduces structures that are very similar to those seen in nature."

Top 10 Ecommerce Tips | Business 2 Community

Achieving success in the ecommerce world is very much like becoming successful in other business formats. Some of the necessary ingredients for building an online shopping cart site that is successful include determination, persistence, hard work, and careful attention to details. Before you decide that launching an online business venture is right for you, however, review these ten online?shopping cart tips.

Tip #1: Consider your company?s name. What is the best way to feature that name in the universal resource locator, or URL? (The URL is your company?s website address.) Often, your business?s exact name is no longer directly available as a URL. However, a slightly different version of it, or a version that uses your store and product name will likely be available for registration. This website address will be a key component of your advertising and marketing strategies, so choose it carefully.

?Tip #2: Develop a website for your web shopping cart that is easily navigated and attractive to customers. Use a design template, or consult with professionals to design a website that will accomplish both these objectives.

Tip #3: Invest in an online shopping cart solution or network storage solution that can be expanded when your store grows. In addition, choose one that best meets the needs of your ecommerce website. Some of the elements to evaluate include security of transaction data, reliability (how frequently the server crashes, and what volume of traffic the network or solution can manage), and specific functions offered by the solution. Also, search for shopping cart solutions that offer ecommerce business strategies.

Tip #4: Select merchant accounts for secure credit card and banking transactions that are designed especially for online shopping carts. Opt for an account that offers the capacity to accept, at minimum, the three most popular types of credit cards as well as Paypal. Evaluate accounts that also accept bank draft transactions.

Tip #5: Make the most of online shopping cart solutions that include ecommerce features such as dedicated email addresses and targeted mailing lists. These components can help your online retail business stand out among competitors, and further the enhancement of ecommerce business strategies designed to further differentiate and advance business branding.

Tip #6: Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of ecommerce marketing strategies by using a specific promotional code for each strategy. By doing this, you will be able to identify which promotions are most effective.

Tip #7: Evaluate all of the text used on your ecommerce website to ensure that you are using terms that will result in effective search engine optimization. Select words that will offer the best search results for your business, and use these words carefully to obtain the highest possible search rankings. Doing this, and submitting the website for your business to top search engines will increase the probability that people shopping online for products will be directed to your online shopping cart.

Tip #8: When developing a website, choose a certain date to celebrate a Grand Opening ? or a reopening ? of your online store, if applicable. Then, promote specials that will be available on this date by targeted email advertising campaigns.

Tip #9: Schedule regular times and dates for website maintenance and redesigning. Remember to introduce and announce new elements in your shopping cart site design. Some of the features to include are feedback forms, blog sites, surveys, and polls.

Tip #10: Keep track of what online shopping cart tips work ? and be aware of the ecommerce tips that don?t work. Use web analytics to continuously monitor the ecommerce marketing strategies that customers find effective. Evaluate which of your pages might require design or text changes to encourage visitor traffic. After you have made these changes, be sure to inform your customers and regular visitors by

email that you have done so. Additionally, note the changes and updates you made to other pages on the website?s main page as well.

Utilizing these ten ecommerce tips, you can establish a successful Internet store, or further the success of an already-existing store. Begin by using these tips, and continue to update your virtual store and expand your business by following these guidelines.

The dock adds four USB 2.0 connections, along with Ethernet, HDMI and audio output.

Moving on, the Latitude 6430u Ultrabook has a 14-inch matte display with 1,366 x 768 resolution. As it happens, it's one of those 14-inch displays crammed into a 13-inch chassis, so the bezels should be pretty narrow. Configuration options include your usual array of Core i3, i5 and i7 processors (vPro optional), with up to 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of solid-state storage. Prices start at $900. Lastly, in case you missed it last month, the OptiPlex 9010 is a 23-inch all-in-one desktop with 1080p resolution and vPro-equipped processors. Design-wise, it's identical to a model Dell announced earlier this year, only now it runs Windows 8, not 7. That starts at $1,200.

Odyssey Golf White Ice #4 Putter

That's White Ice #4. Not Ice-Nine.

Winter is coming. The peasants say it will be the longest winter in known time. Dismiss their folk superstitions and prognostications at your peril, for the fact remains: Winter is coming, and you must get your outdoor jollies while ye may.

The whiffle and crack of golf club against ball will be heard no more once the great snows come. Campfires and hikes to alpine meadows will be but the tales of old women -- half-recalled memories of a happier, sunnier time.

They say that, when winter comes, exercise will be banished from the land. Joggers will huff into benumbed fists. Cyclists will wrap themselves in layer after layer of spandex, hibernating until the Great Thaw. Those Crossfit people will stop dragging weights outside their gym like idiots. It will be a dark time.

So go forth! Sieze this weather while it lasts, and outfit yourself with totally acceptable gear from this Woot Off. You might want to grab a few wolf pelts and cords of wood while you're at it (sold elsewhere, maybe).

Hope to see you alive on the other side, friend.

Principals Roundtable: Tighter Fees a Huge Challenge

by Staff | Tuesday, October 23, 2012

Nokia in Silicon Valley by Gensler, the firm ranked number one in Interior Design's Top 100 Giants according to earnings; however, many firms still struggle to attain their pre-recession level fees. Photo by Nic Lehoux.

This is the first in a series of articles that will cover the main issues discussed at the recent principals roundtable held by Interior Design and IIDA at NeoCon East in Baltimore, Md.

It should come as no surprise that the 20 or so top executives of design and architectural firms who attended Interior Design and IIDA?s principal?s roundtable last week agreed that they are working harder, longer and more intensely than ever before. The kicker, however, is that they are also earning the same or even less than they earned prior to the 2008 recession.

?Clients expect more, but aren?t willing to pay more,? said an executive of a large global design firm. (To ensure a frank and open conversation about the high priority issues impacting the design industry, Interior Design and IIDA agreed not to identify attendees.)

In fact, many who attended the roundtable held at last week?s NeoCon East in Baltimore, Md., don?t see the shrinking fee structure changing any time soon. ?They want more services for less,? said a principal of a mid-sized design firm. ??The problem is that as the fees go down, it is hard to get them back up again. This impacts everything.?

To understand how tighter fees have impacted companies, many in the group noted that firms used to assign ten designers to a project and now assign only three. Even working and focusing on one project is a luxury from a bygone era, with most designers tackling several at once to be more cost-effective.

Question: Are stagnant or declining fees for the same or more work than you did four to five years ago the number one issue facing design firms today?? Respond here.

Most assigned the blame to brokerage firms who are branching out into areas traditionally handled by design or architecture firms. ?Brokers are setting the tone, sending out RFPs to firms and telling clients that this is the way to get the best price,? said an executive of a large design firm, adding that brokers are also moving into the planning and programming stages. This, she said, is happening increasingly in the corporate field.

Added another design executive: ?The best value is not finding the cheapest partner, the cheapest designer or architect? but that?s what they are hearing from the brokers.?? The group agreed that sometimes a broker would advise a client to go for a higher priced space, convincing them that they can save on the build out. This often leads to unrealistic expectations when it comes to the fees and scope of work.

?The solution is to write concise, tight contracts. We will do these five things for this much,? said one executive from a large design firm, adding that clients usually understand once you show them that that their requests are outside the agreed upon scope. Still, she pointed out, a firm is more constrained with new clients compared with repeat clients who have worked through the issue before.? Nevertheless, she said: ? It can?t be architecture by the pound.?

Question: Do you find the increasing influence that brokers have with clients hurts your business and creates unrealistic expectations? ?Respond here.

Still, business has picked up with multi-family, healthcare and higher education leading the way. It?s an increase relegated to certain regions of the country, with a strong showing in the D.C. areas, for example, thanks in part to government projects. ?The work is healthy, but the fee structure is not,? said one design executive, adding that her practice is inundated with work due to new construction. ?Still it?s hard to make money. You can?t deliver the hip, the cool and the new at this fee structure.?

And that, on nearly every level, is what clients are looking for? and expect without having to pay additional for it.

Next week: A look at how Hospitality?s growing influence across all market segments has impacted how design firms work and compete.

Bike Riding: Researching Auto Responders | CoolHQ ...

If you are in the Internet marketing business or if you run a business online, an autoresponder can make a world of difference. They can handle a majority of your technical support questions and informational requests, by sending out automated messages to interested customers. When they get an email, they will respond instantly with a preset message. This can save you quite a bit of time- especially if you get a lot of emails on a daily basis.

Out there on the Internet, there are many autoresponders to choose from. They are classified into three main types ? locally hosted, remote hosted and desktop hosted. Each type has pros and cons, depending on your needs. Locally and desktop hosted programs will give you complete control over the program, as you run them through your own server or website. Remote hosted on the other hand, is ran through a third party service provider. Remote programs cost you a monthly fee, while desktop and locally hosted programs cost one fee ? then you have complete ownership of the program.

Before you decide to purchase an autoresponder, you should always compare and see what each one has to offer. If you are interested in running one from your server or website, then you?ll need to look at desktop and locally hosted autoresponders. There are free programs available online, although they will normally come with strings attached, such as ads in your emails. This can be a bad thing, as ads in your email will give customers the wrong impression. www.Automatic-Responder.com is a great service that also offers a free version for up to 250 subscribers and no advertisements.

When you purchase one of these types of autoresponder programs, you should always research and find out all that you can. There are many programs out there that you can buy, many of which will offer you great features at a great price. Buying your program is the way to go, especially if you have an image to uphold. Once you have found a program and buy it, it will be yours for as long as you decide to use it.

If you are looking towards a remotely hosted autoresponder, you?ll need to research for the best prices and service, this is a must when shopping around. You?ll be dealing with a company who has control over the address of the autoresponder, meaning that your domain name won?t appear in the emails you send using the autoresponder. This can be good for some, although many prefer to have their name in their emails.

When it all comes down to it, you should always research an autoresponder before you decide to make a purchase or use a free program. There are several out there to choose from, although some are far superior to others. If you take the time and research what each one has to offer you and how much it will cost you ? you?ll end up with an autoresponder that will prove to be more than worth the cost.

DIY Vinegar

DIY VinegarMaking vinegar starts with a culture just like yogurt or sourdough bread. Add to this wine and a year and you'll have wonderful vinegar that will impress ay foodie and only get better with time.

San Francisco culinary weblog The Eater's Digest shares that you can purchase starter cultures from winemaking shops but you can also just buy any bottle of unpasteurized vinegar from a local natural grocer or farmers market. Save the leftover bits of wine that are not consumed until you have at least a gallon or so. When you're ready to begin fill an oak barrel or ceramic crock with your unfinished wine, an equal amount of water, and the vinegar starter culture. It'll take a year for the batch to become fully ready to use but if you're bitten by the vinegar bug you can start new batches every few months so you'll frequently have new batches of vinegar maturing.

Lexus LF-LC Hybrid Comes Out, Down Under | My Perfect Automobile

Rating: 5.0/5 (1 vote cast)

The official, new name of Lexus?s stunning concept car is LF-LC Blue, and it is currently captivating crowds of onlookers at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney. A short list of the vehicle?s amenities includes a pair of 12-inch LCD touch-screens, sculpted air-intake vents, wrap-around windows, and a carbon-fiber body. Those who love hybrids and power will notice the 500-horsepower drivetrain and high-energy battery pack. Lexus says such organic design is the future of hybrid vehicles.

The following clip features interior and exterior shots, and even a rare bit of driving footage, of the breathtakingly hot Lexus LF-LC Blue concept, which is currently on display at the AIMS. This is actually the second version of the car, which made its debut in Detroit in January of 2012. The color is a nod to Australia?s naturally occurring opal gemstones, which are a unique hue, like the LF-LC. Auto show officials love this car because it is an instant crowd pleaser and ticket seller. Geneva event personnel say the LF-LC was one of the show?s top draws. The initials stand for Lexus Future-Luxury Coupe.

Lexus LF-LC Hybrid

Lexus used a combination of carbon fiber and aluminum to give the car its lightweight, efficient fluidity that is just one part of what the company calls the Lexus Hybrid Drive system. In Australia, a Lexus spokesperson said, ?The LF-LC is part concept, part reality. The concept hints at what?s to come from Lexus, while the reality has us actively studying how we can engineer and build a vehicle like this in the future. One of the many unique design elements of the car is the touch-screen, which does not force the driver to shift position or alter the line of sight in order to operate the controls.

Fifa '13 WII U New Details | Video Game Blog, Video Games ...

Every year, without failure, EA games graces the market with a new version of its famous officially licensed sports titles. Despite some controversy like the lack of real changes between each years? game, many gamers are always waiting for the next iteration of their favourite EA sports game.
This year, with the incoming WII U release, EA has been hard at work to develop the WII U version of one its best selling games: Fifa ?13
Unfortunately, it seems that soccer fans may be slightly disapponted in knowing that Fifa 13 WII U version will lack some feautures present in the other versions. There?s also some good news as EA has tried to use the WII U gamepad in a number of interesting ways.
Matt Prior, WII U version producer, has revealed that some features like Fifa street skill system and the First Touch system couldn?t be tweaked properly for the new Nintendo console version because of a lack of time: the team had its hands full building the game?s foundation from the ground up and getting the engine to work on a new hardware.
The game will also lack the Fifa Ultimate Team add on, a virtual trading card game that?s really popular among the fanbase: WII U?s online infrastructure is still too young to get everything working properly
The team had only 14 months to get the game ready for November and even though the work was done alongside the other versions, it was too hard to reach parity since the other versions already had their foundations ready.
Fifa 13 Wii U, despite all the cuts, will feature some exclusive modes, like Manager Mode.
In Manager Mode players will be able to use the Gamepad to make players change their positions on the field, change formations and quickly set up man marking. Not only that: in Manager Mode player will be able to improve the team?s morale by praising or criticizing up to 3 players.
Other than Manager Mode, players will also be able the Gamepad touchscreen for shooting and passing.

The Wii U version of Fifa 13 will be released on November, the exact release date is still unknow at this time. Some new screenshots can be seen on the Official Nintendo Magazine website

Alpha Efficiency Introduction To Outsourcing

Welcome to introduction to outsourcing. Prior to writing this article, I?ve asked my Virtual Assistants (VA?s from now on) to conduct a research on outsourcing, find me 5 top bloggers in this niche, get me the wikipedia facts and get me on the course of writing this article. After witnessing the results for myself, I?ve seen that hiring and running a team of VA?s is the right direction when running an online business, and ultimate productivity booster for digital entrepreneurs.

The time for outsourcing is just right. There was not a better time in history of the world for entrepreneurs to have more opportunities at having their business succeed in times of struggling economy, even on a low budget. Especially for young, talented, technologically savvy people.

What is outsourcing exactly?

Definition By Wikipedia:

Outsourcing is the contracting out of a business process, which an organization may have previously performed internally or has a new need for, to an independent organization from which the process is purchased back as a service. Though the practice of purchasing a business function?instead of providing it internally?is a common feature of any modern economy, the term outsourcing became popular in America near the turn of the 21st century. An outsourcing deal may also involve transfer of the employees and assets involved to the outsourcing business partner.

The definition of outsourcing includes both foreign or domestic contracting, which may include offshoring, described as ?a company taking a function out of their business and relocating it to another country.?

But Alpha Efficiency definition of outsourcing is very different:

Outsourcing all the tasks that do not require your physical presence to a team of virtual assistants across the globe, by leveraging economic disparity of the living standards across the planet.

The difference between the business and personal outsourcing is just the fact that professional outsourcers have team of people specially trained for the task, while in your own case, you will be hiring individuals, that will conduct the work, that you will train them to do.

If big companies are doing it, why wouldn?t you? They are making millions of dollars by leveraging economic disparity, it?s time for you to do the same. Run your business like a pro.

As an efficient outsourcer, you will have to know how to properly use and leverage the tools that are freely available (or cheap), in order to get work done. Apart from that field of work, there are also emerging digital agencies with teams of VA?s, who are already trained, or have good learning skills.

Investment costs

VA?s are running anywhere from 200$/a month till 2000$/a month (for developers). Hiring and training a VA will turn out to be one of the smartest financial investment regarding your available time. Sometimes this investment will replace you in the workplace, thus allowing you to completely devote all of your job time, into time reserved for working on your own business.

Another investment you will have to make is going to be time. It will take time for you to learn elementary skills for running a team of VA?s, but after everything is said, done and emailed, you will know that the procedures, best practices and hours invested, are going to pay off dividends in abundance of time.

Prerequisites

I don?t expect that this is for everyone. Only people who have vision, and careful execution will be able to get the most out of this, and create a complete business, that doesn?t require themselves to be involved in it, at all. Aside from that, it?s going to cost you time and money. But it?s going to be time well spent, and money very well invested.

So how do I find VA?s?

VA?s are blowing up on the internet. For the time being, I believe that there is more of the offer, than there is the demand, which is the good thing, as it moves prices down. Although, always expect to pay top bucks for the rare skill sets, like coding and graphic design.

If you never had outsourcing experience there is a service that I am going to review, and write guides on how to use it, that is perfect for beginners, as it is affordable, intuitive and the guys behind the backend are SMART.

SMART VA is worth more than the money you invest in him. This service is called Efficise.com I will talk about

Other places where you can find VA?s:

  1. Bestjobs.ph ? This is like a Craiglists, just for Philippines. A great place to look for a VA on your own.
  2. http://www.virtualstafffinder.com ? This is a service from a great friend of mine Chris Ducker.

What are the advantages of Outsourcing?

Large businesses are using outsourcing to achieve economy of scales. Outsourcing on demand is cutting your expenses, and exponentially increases your productivity. As an individual, you can pioneer into the low cost zone of personal outsourcing, and make the amazing leverage. Trading your money for time of other people, so you can focus on reducing time in office, reducing stress, and generally start living.

If you are capable of identifying low value work, turn it into a process, define it, and communicate it clearly to your assistants, you are creating a leverage on your professional life. If you combine outsourcing with CORE system, it gets ridiculously easy. But outsourcing is a skill set by itself, and will take time for you to learn it, and apply it. If you could pay 300-500$ a month, just to get yourself out of the office, or buy some more time to develop your own business, would you do it?

There is nothing more valuable in your life, than time. The value of money in comparison to your time is insignificant. Money is an idea, but your time isn?t! So learning more about outsourcing is a way to go.

What?s next?

This is just the beginning of the outsourcing series, that is going to be published weekly. Now it?s your turn: Did you ever consider outsourcing? What are your outsourcing challenges?

Man who thought plane was on fire charged with disrupting Utah flight

SALT LAKE CITY (Reuters) - A Ukrainian immigrant, who is accused of disrupting an airline flight and assaulting its crew because he believed the wing was on fire, was ordered on Friday to remain in custody in Utah to face charges.

A federal judge ordered a mental evaluation for Anatoliy Baranovich, 46, who authorities said had been drinking and had passports for 19 women and $6,500 in cash in his luggage.

Prosecutors believe the mental examination may shed light on Baranovich's actions during a Delta Airlines flight from Boston to Salt Lake City on Monday. Baranovich is charged with one count each of damaging and disabling an aircraft and interference with a flight crew.

Prosecutors say Baranovich, who was returning home to Oregon after a trip to Ukraine, awoke from a nap, looked out a window as the plane descended for landing and thought he saw fire.

He became agitated and began yelling in Russian before bolting from his seat to the rear of the aircraft where he tried to open the emergency doors.

At a detention hearing in Salt Lake City's federal court, FBI agent Cameron Smiley said Baranovich ignored commands from flight attendants to calm down and fought off at least five passengers before he was subdued.

Baranovich told police he had a few beers at airport stops in Amsterdam and Boston and one glass of wine on the Boston-to-Salt Lake flight, Smiley said.

Smiley said Baranovich was calm during their interview, but again became violent when officers found 19 Ukrainian passports, mostly for young women, in his luggage. Baranovich also was carrying more than $6,500 in cash and offered to give the money to police if they would release him, the agent said.

"I told him we didn't work like that," Smiley testified.

Defense attorneys asked that Baranovich be released because his behavior was an aberration. A permanent U.S. resident, Baranovich has no history of violence or any record of criminal behavior or arrests in the U.S., his lawyer said.

District Magistrate Judge Dustin Pead said he was troubled by Baranovich's access to passports and cash, which could make him a flight risk.

No new hearing dates have been set. If convicted, Baranovich faces a possible maximum sentence of 40 years in federal prison.

Student Radio is not what it used to be?. | Thought Leader

In many parts of the world student radio stations are bastions of progressivism, and staffed by active, engaged students who lead discussions against injustice and stand up for persecuted and vulnerable groups and communities. In the US, where I spent several years teaching at university, radio stations typically get involved in progressive causes: LGBT issues, environmental issues, gender violence, racism ? these are all the topics that radio stations engage with. The University of Pretoria Radio station, TUKS FM, has to be one of the most narrow-minded, unprofessional and offensive institutions on the air.

News reports are poorly written and often presenters laugh or giggle while reading the news. That?s just unprofessional. What is even more offensive, is the ugly rubbish the peddle about things that happen ?only in Africa? ? which is invariably code-speak for deeply racist views. Of course, there are no racists in South Africa. We live in a racist country where there are no racists. Except, though, if you point out that one particular group who have dominated the country for 400 years continue to enjoy the vertically segmented privileges of centuries of exclusivity ? then THAT is racism. I shall write more about that on another occasion; about the shift in morality?.

Anyway, back to TUKS FM. Having spent the past 12 months living in Pretoria, I often turn to them for music. They play the greatest diversity of music I enjoy; from Jack Parrow to Jimmy Hendricks. The people who work on the station are, however, some of the most ill-informed, misguided young people I have listened to. Their asinine comments and self-righteousness knows no bounds ? especially when it comes to things that ?only happen in Africa?. In one commentary earlier this year, the jock behind the mike, spoke sarcastically about an octogenarian who was raped. He suggest that this was something unique to post-apartheid. So, I sent them a link to similar cases in the US and Britain. This did not seem to make any impact. Last Friday, 18 October, in their spot ?TIA? ? This is Africa ? they told the story about a police car being stolen and then crashed. The wise jock, explained that he had never heard of something like that anywhere else in the world.

We know he is not racist ? ask Malan or Hofmeyr; there is no racism in South Africa and whites have never done anything wrong. What is deeply troubling, however, is that it took me less than 30 seconds to find, online, a list of more than a 1?000 similar incidents in North America. Now, given the self-absolution that is so pervasive in South Africa, I don?t expect the radio jocks and the sycophantic (giggling female) voices that affirm everything the real men say on the station (they don?t seem to realise how they are reproducing sexist, patriarchal stereotypes), to abandon their Afro-pessimism (we will not call it racism). Hell, they can?t even except that 400 years of domination, exclusion, the forced movement of millions of people to remote parts of the country and that the destruction of communities and families over centuries have a lasting, inter-generational affect on contemporary South Africa and that this can help us understand dislocation, over-crowding and the collapse of infrastructure in urban areas?

For the rest of us, this link is to the source of hundreds of police cars that were stolen ? not in Africa. The US evidence is especially pertinent, because the jocks (as well as those on Five FM, Metro, among other) use the US as a reference point for almost EVERYTHING that they do. It is as if the rest of the world is a cultural void. Recently Jacaranda FM joked about Arab culture and faked Arabic accents laughed hysterically when someone was accidentally killed at a wedding because a gun was fired into the air at said wedding. The worst part of all this, is that their offensive behaviour and conduct hides behind a veneer of self-given innocence and absolution. About these, latter, issues, I will publish something later.
