CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's state news agency says judges have decided to keep a prominent activist in detention until June 3, when a verdict is expected on a charge of insulting the country's president.
Ahmed Douma is the first to be tried on the charge, punishable by up to three years in prison. He was detained April 30 following a complaint by a member of the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood group, from which President Mohammed Morsi hails. Douma held Morsi responsible for recent bloodshed, calling him a "criminal" in a TV interview.
The news agency said at the court session Monday, police clashed with Douma's supporters and lawyers.
Lawyer Sameh Ashour told the judges Douma's comments fall within his right to freely express his opinion and should not be considered a criminal offense.
