Sharks sign Joe Pavelski to 5-year extension

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) ? The San Jose Sharks signed center Joe Pavelski to a $30 million, five-year contract extension Tuesday that will keep him off the free-agent market next summer.

"It's always exciting when a franchise puts that responsibility on you a little bit," Pavelski said. "It's important to continue to play at a high level in that regard. It's a position I wanted to be in, and it's exciting to have this opportunity."

Pavelski is the second key player signed to an extension this offseason by general manager Doug Wilson. Center Logan Couture also signed a $30 million, five-year extension earlier this month, a year before he could become a free agent. The deals keep both players under contract through the 2018-19 season.

Pavelski, a seventh-round pick in 2003, has become a cornerstone of the franchise that has long been led by Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau.

"He is one of our core players, the way he plays," general manager Doug Wilson. "To me it was just an important contract to get done on the heels of Logan's contract also. He fits for now and the future the way he plays the game."

He was tied for third on the team in points last season when he had 16 goals and 15 assists in 48 games. He is also a key part of both the power-play and penalty-kill units, is strong in the faceoff circle and has the versatility to play center or wing.

The 29-year-old has 150 goals and 186 assists in 479 career games with San Jose. He ranks 10th in his draft class in points per game (0.70) and is the only player in the top 15 to be selected after the second round.

"He's a hockey player," Wilson said. "We use him on the point on the power play, we use him on the first line, we use him on key faceoffs, blocking shots. He won a national championship in college for a reason. He's a winner. He's a great role model for many of our other players who are home-grown. The way he plays the game, it's not about stats, even though his stats are very impressive. It's about what you can do to make a difference to win a game.

He is third among all American-born players with 158 points over the past three seasons and has been invited to attend the United States' national team orientation camp next month in preparation for the 2014 Olympics. Pavelski won the silver medal with the Americans in Vancouver in 2010.

Pavelski has been a strong performer in the postseason throughout his career, with four goals and eight assists for a team-high 12 points in 11 playoff games last year. He has 24 goals and 26 assists in 74 career playoff games.

"I've played at a high level at times throughout my career and through stretches," Pavelski said. "It's about getting to that high level and maintaining it and expecting it on a nightly basis."

Locking up Couture and Pavelski long term was a key goal this offseason for the Sharks. They still have a few notable potential older free agents next summer in Thornton, Marleau and star defenseman Dan Boyle.

Wilson said he has already talked with all three about new deals but that Couture and Pavelski were the priority because they are younger.

Blank Rome shutters Hong Kong office

Blank Rome said Wednesday that it closed its Hong Kong office ?as part of a broader realignment of its resources in response to client demand.? The Philadelphia-based law firm said that it decided to consolidate its Asia practice in Shanghai.

?After just over two full years of operation, our Shanghai office has quickly emerged to play a vital role in our ability to service clients globally, and continues to have a positive impact on the firm?s revenues,? Blank Rome Co-Chairman and Managing Partner Alan J. Hoffman said. ?In response to client needs and local economic forecasts, we determined that Blank Rome will remain focused on China from its Shanghai office while we look to expand further in the United States and elsewhere in the world. We anticipate a solid 2013 and hope to grow our global capabilities, particularly in corporate law, intellectual property, maritime and litigation.?

Blank Rome opened a Hong Kong office in September 2006 when it acquired 23-lawyer Healy & Baillie, a maritime-law firm based in New York with offices in Hong Kong. It opened in Shanghai in 2011.

But the firm said it chose to close the Hong Kong location July 27 as a reflection of its strategic plan, which it said includes growing its U.S. offices, looking at other foreign markets for potential expansion and having a more focused strategic approach in Asia.

The firm?s four Hong Kong lawyers have left for other firms. Corporate lawyer and office managing partner Kristi Swartz and litigation partner Nigel Binnersley both moved to the Hong Kong office of St. Louis-based Bryan Cave. The firm also had paralegals and support staff and said that it has worked in recent months to ensure a smooth transition, both of client work and for each of the affected staff members.

Microsoft 'looking into' bundling headsets with Xbox One

Microsoft senior director of product planning Albert Penello has indicated that the company could yet reverse its decision not to bundle a headset with each Xbox One console. Earlier this week the firm began pricing Xbox One peripherals, including the console?s official monaural headset, which will cost $25 and plug directly into an Xbox One controller much like its 360 predecessor.

Microsoft has previously stressed the ability of Kinect, which will come as standard with every Xbox One, to isolate voices from background noise, positioning it as an all-in-one solution for video and audio chatting. However, this hasn?t gone down well with some consumers, and Microsoft has taken note, according to Penell:

Penello also expressed enthusiasm for a fan-suggested Spectator Mode on Xbox One:

Microsoft has confirmed that Xbox One will launch in 21 markets this November priced at $500 / ?430. Xbox One games will cost $59.99 / ?49.99.

Nexus 7 review (2013)

Who knew affordable tablets could be so good? That was our reaction after reviewing the original Nexus 7 when it went on sale last year for $200; at the time, comparably specced products were going for at least $100 more. So, when this year's follow-up came out at a slightly higher price ($229 and up), we were a little concerned the higher cost would dissuade penny-pinching shoppers from taking the plunge. The Nexus 7 (2013) is definitely the best bang for your buck, and is still affordable enough for most budget-savvy shoppers. Read on for more.

Google Chromecast review

Despite the best efforts of Panasonic, Samsung, Sony, LG and others, most of the televisions in people's homes these days are not of the smart variety. However, there are hundreds of millions of regular televisions packing HDMI ports, and Google's new Chromecast device offers a way to put some brains into those dumb TVs. Chromecast is an easy way to stream internet video to your TV from almost any source. With a price of just $35 price it's a bona fide steal. Skirt on up above for our full review.

Tunisia: Extremists Kill 9 Troops, Defiant Gov???t Sets Dec. 17 Elections

After days of demonstrations and turmoil, Prime Minister Ali Larayedh addressed the public in Tunisia on Monday. Despite calls that he resign in favor of a national unity government, he insisted that he will remain in office, and apparently there will be no major cabinet shuffle. He did make a concession in guaranteeing that new elections for a regular parliament will be held on December 17. That is the third anniversary of the self-immolation of Mohamed Bouazizi touched off the Tunisian and other Arab revolutions.

Also on Monday, Tunisian troops tracking Muslim extremists near the Algerian border got into a firefight with them and 9 troops were killed. For a small country such as Tunisia, it is a very high death toll, and Tunisians are upset because they are not used to this sort of thing.

Euronews reports:

The assassination of the leftist founder of the Popular Front, Mohamed Brahmi, last week, touched off several days of turmoil and provoked demands that the government resign. Over 50 of the 217 members of the transitional parliament have suspended their activities in protest, and on Monday the Education Minister resigned. Critics of the government complain that since it is dominated by devotees of political Islam, it is not sufficiently vigorous in fighting terrorism issuing from the Muslim religious right.

Critics have complained that the current Constituent Assembly was only elected for one year, on Oct. 23, 2011, and that it should have drafted a new constitution and moved to new elections a full year ago. When I was in Tunisia in early April, some youth maintained to me that the parliamentarians would keep delaying new elections because they liked their salaries and connections and were trying for bigger pensions. Many secular Tunisians, and those committed to human rights, also fear that the draft constitution that will be reported out within a few weeks will contain repressive articles, because of the undue influence of the religious right, of which Renaissance forms part.

Larayedh took a hard line on the anti-government demonstrations by 4 or 5 thousand people in Bardo in front of the parliament building in Tunis. He implied that if mob rule were the way his opponents wanted to go, his Muslim fundamentalist Renaissance (Ennahda) Party could put really big masses in the streets. He said he had not gone that route out of a desire to avoid public tumult. He also attacked the deputies of the Democratic Forum for Labor and Liberties (Ettakattul) of Mostapha Ben Jafar for threatening to withdraw from the ruling coalition, saying that they were being opportunistic.

The Forum only has 20 seats out of 217, whereas President Moncef Marzouki?s Congress for the Republic has 29 and the Renaissance Party has 89. Since President Marzouki is sticking with his partnership with Renaissance, Larayedh would actually still have 118 seats, a slim majority, even without the Forum, and besides, finding 20 seats among small parties and independents to replace the Forum would not be that difficult. The Forum leader Mostapha Ben Jafar, would just lose his position as speaker of the Parliament if his party withdrew.

Meanwhile pro-and anti-government demonstrations continue in front of the parliament building.

Euronews has video:

The Renaissance Party?s determination to tough it out and finish out the planned transition normally is made possible by its overwhelming position in parliament, its powerful grassroots organization, and the weakness and smallness of the Tunisian military. Also, that Tunisia has a secular president committed to continuing his coalition with the religious-right Renaissance Party also helps.

Philadelphia Phillies Exhaust Every Snarky Headline About Being Bad at Baseball

source:

This is Steve Susdorf. He plays for the Philadelphia Phillies.

The good news is the Phillies won?t lose today. The bad news is the Phillies stink.

If you weren?t paying attention over the weekend ? and really, we hope you weren?t ? the Phillies continued their downward spiral into irrelevance by getting swept at the hands of the Detroit Tigers and as a bonus shin-kick they capped it off in pathetically ugly fashion.

Their losing streak stands at 8 games, the Phils sit 11 games out in the East and 9.5 out in the wild card. The trade deadline is two days away. It may not have officially sunk, but the ship has taken water and there?s not enough life boats on board for everyone.

Let?s see what the guys have to say about the latest laughable loss.

Jonathan Papelbon:

?I definitely didn?t come here for this,? the Phillies? closer told MLB.com?s Todd Zolecki.

Oh. And:

?No, I would like to stay here. But if I?m going to have to put up with this year after year, then no, I don?t want to be here. Why would you? Why would anybody??

He has a point for once.

Jimmy Rollins:

?If there?s a bottom, this has to be it,? said Jimmy Rollins. ?I can?t imagine things getting worse than they have this past week, culminating the way they did today.?

Don?t be so sure.

Charlie Manuel:

Embarrassing? Ugly? Frightful? Go ahead and pick an adjective. Manager Charlie Manuel has a few of his own.

?When we play that bad, yeah, I?m upset. In some ways it?s embarrassing to me,? Manuel said. ?We come to the ballpark every day to play and to play right and win the game. When we don?t play right and we play bad ? very bad ? it bothers me.?

Whatever.

I don?t really know what to add at this point. Zoo with Roy pretty much nailed it.

New lake at North Pole? More of a pond, really

Is the buzz warranted over a new "lake" at the North Pole thanks to global warming? Mostly no. But the Arctic ice is melting.

By David Clark Scott,?Staff writer / July 27, 2013

A buoy anchored near a remote Arctic webcam shows a large meltwater pond on July 22.

The online buzz over a new "lake" on the North Pole as the latest symbol of global warming is mostly hype.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; // google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Yes, there is a new foot-deep body of water in the Arctic. But this isn't unusual. This is another Arctic pond caused by seasonal (summer) warming. And the camera lens distorts the size.

"I have seen much more extensive ponding," James Morison, the principal investigator for the North Pole Environmental Observatory told The Atlantic. "Because we use wide angle lenses the melt pond looks much bigger than it is."

Note the use of the word "pond" to describe this body of water.

The Atlantic goes on to note that last summer's Arctic ice melt was one of the worst, and this year's hasn't been as bad, so far. The now-famous pond was the result of an early July heat wave.

"While the rate of Arctic sea ice loss is normally fastest during July, the warmest month of the year, ice loss was even faster than usual over the first two weeks of July 2013," according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center. "Compared to the 1981 to 2010 average, ice extent on July 15, 2013 was 1.06 million square kilometers (409,000 square miles) below average."

Still, global warming is taking a toll on the Arctic, say most scientists. As the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration 2012 Arctic Report Card states: "Large changes in multiple indicators are affecting climate and ecosystems, and, combined, these changes provide strong evidence of the momentum that has developed in the Arctic environmental system due to the impacts of a persistent warming trend that began over 30 years ago."

And as The Christian Science Monitor noted this week, it's not the creation of Arctic ponds that's worrying ? it's the release of methane gas. The release of Arctic methane gas due to warming trends is an "economic time bomb," which could cost the world $60 trillion. Yes, that's trillion ? the equivalent of the world's entire economic output in 2012.

"The Arctic ice stores roughly 50 billion tons of methane, a concentrated gas some 20 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. Over the past few years, scientists have observed the gas pluming from the region?s thawing ice. That raised the question: even as profits are hauled in from shipping and drilling in the Arctic, could that methane gas be waiting to undo all those gains? Could the toll of that released gas far outweigh the rewards of melting Arctic?s ice?"

Nokia Promises All major iOS and Android Apps Are Coming, Only Question is When

nokia-apps-hero-900x365-pngEngadget had a chance to sit down with?Bryan Biniak, the general manager of app development at Nokia and asked the tough questions. Mainly when are we going to see the Android and iOS gap filled in WP? Bryan?s answer was interesting to say the least; where he mentioned that not a single major app developer they approached had said ?no? instead all that matters is the ?when? of the apps arrival to the platform.

We?re not having a single conversation with anybody, of any material application that?s out there, that isn?t going to be coming to the platform. It?s not a matter of if ? I had those conversations, the ?if? conversations, before ? all of our conversations now are ?when.?

Of course one of those major apps would have to be Instagram, which although the demand has been sated by the likes of instance metrogram and now even Oggl, it remains the most prominent app to hold out on the platform.

The other big name who is absent from WP would have to be Google, who for competitive reasons (under the pretence of there being no interest in WP) have barely released any apps at all (only Google search and the Youtube app with Microsoft), they?ve even abstained from creating a Google+ app (not that many people care :P ). When asked about Google?s stance towards developing for WP Bryan?s reply was:

They are doing themselves a disservice by not being on every screen.? He also used the big G as an example of a company that prefers web-based apps, whereas Nokia is pushing for native apps. ?That will get resolved over time, but as consumer demand builds, they?re not going to have an option,? Biniak said. For clarity, we asked whether Google is actively discussing WP8 apps, to which Biniak replied, ?yeah, absolutely.?

What I find most interesting about this, is the fact that once again it?s Nokia going the extra mile (or ten) to fill the WP app gap, while Microsoft does god knows what. (as far as I can think of, the new Halo is practically the only real big app Microsoft have created besides the social apps).

Witness: Spain train driver said he went fast

SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA, Spain (AP) ? The driver of a speeding train that derailed in Spain, killing 78 people, said minutes after the crash that he had been going fast and couldn't brake, a local resident who rushed to the scene of the accident said in an interview broadcast Sunday.

Evaristo Iglesias told Antena 3 television that he and another person accompanied the blood-soaked Francisco Jose Garzon Amo to a stretch of flat ground where other injured people were being laid out, waiting for emergency services to arrive.

"He told us that he wanted to die," Iglesias said.

"He said he had needed to brake but couldn't," Iglesias said. He added that Garzon said "he had been going fast."

The television channel showed a photograph of Iglesias in a pink shirt and cap helping carry the driver after the Wednesday accident in Santiago De Compostela.

It also aired television footage of Iglesias working beside the wrecked train to help other survivors.

Garzon has been released from the hospital and is in police custody on suspicion of negligent homicide. He is expected to give testimony to an investigating judge later Sunday, though he exercised his right to remain silent when police tried to interview him.

The judge will also have access to information contained in the train's "black box," which is similar to those found on aircraft.

The train carrying 218 passenger in eight cars blazed far over the speed limit into a high-risk curve, tumbling off the tracks and slamming into a concrete wall, with some of the cars catching fire.

Authorities have pointed to speed as the culprit, and officials have said that the brakes should have been applied four kilometers (2.5 miles) before the train hit the curve.

Investigators must determine if Garzon failed to apply the brakes or whether it was a technical failure.

Iglesias was among survivors and witnesses who began to give evidence to police on Sunday.

Meanwhile, authorities said forensic experts have identified the last three bodies among the dead. They did not reveal the names of the dead, but said Sunday that all of the families had been notified.

Mourning continued throughout Spain, with Sunday church services being held in remembrance of the dead.

A large funeral mass is planned for Monday afternoon, and the prime minister and royal family are expected to attend.

Thousands fill German streets to protest Berlin's NSA ... - RT News

Published time: July 27, 2013 11:31
Edited time: July 27, 2013 19:54

Protesters wearing masks of U.S. whistleblower Edward Snowden hold a sign disparaging the National Security Agency (NSA) outside the "Dagger Complex", which is used by the U.S. Army intelligence services, during a demonstration against the NSA and in support of Snowden in Griesheim, 20km (12.4 miles) south of Frankfurt, July 20, 2013. (Reuters/Kai Pfaffenbach)

Download video

Thousands of demonstrators have gathered across Germany in support of Edward Snowden and Bradley Manning, as German writers published an open letter to Chancellor Merkel demanding explanations over the country?s involvement in the NSA spying program.

Protests were organized in at least 40 German cities, including Hamburg, Munich, and Berlin, with the largest rally taking place in Frankfurt.

Participants responded to calls for demonstrations, which were initiated by a loose network calling itself #stopwatchingus. Demonstrators gathered for marches despite searing summer temperatures, some of them wearing tin foil hats to shield themselves from the sun. Others held posters in support of NSA intelligence leaker Edward Snowden.?

The protests come just days after Snowden was awarded the Whistleblower award, established by German human rights organizations in 1999.

?How come the BND [Germany's foreign intelligence service] and Verfassungsschutz [German domestic intelligence] use the NSA-program ?XKeyScore? for surveillance, even though there is no legal basis for it? Is the government going to bypass the rule of law, instead of defending it?" reads the letter published in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung daily and signed by 48 writers.

And the letter has grown into something bigger that an outcry from Germany?s cultural elite, as more than 5,000 people put their signatures below the text, after it was transformed into an online petition by one of its authors, writer Juli Zeh.?

The appeal to Chancellor Merkel reminds her of her own words ? ?Germany is not a surveillance state? ? which she uttered at the July 20 press conference. The writers go on to say that wasn?t true.

?We witness a historic attack on our constitutional democracy, the reversal from presumption of innocence to general suspicion,? says the letter, demanding answers from Angela Merkel, who said she never knew anything about PRISM until the media leaked Snowden?s revelations.?

That stance has however been shattered by Der Spiegel magazine, which exposed that German secret services had a role to play in the NSA spying process.

While Merkel has been cautious in commenting on the issue, even justifying the NSA methods Germany?s President Joachim Gauck spoke out in defense of Snowden.

"This will normally only be put right if information is made public. Whoever draws the public's attention to it and acts out of conscience deserves respect," he told Passauer Neue Presse newspaper, as cited by Reuters.?

Although the German president does not possess political power ? that rests in the hands of the chancellor - Gauck?s voice matters as he is a highly popular and respected politician with a record in defending civil rights.

An East German dissident during the time when the country was divided, Gauck worked on exposing Stasi, the secret police, which conducted massive surveillance.

"The fear that our telephones or mails are recorded and stored by foreign intelligence services is a constraint on the feeling of freedom and then the danger grows that freedom itself is damaged," Gauck said, referring to the NSA program.

The government feels it has to somehow respond to the avalanche of criticism over its role in helping the US-led spying. Two of Germany?s most senior cabinet members have come up with the initiative to push the UN to change their current privacy legislation, which has remained intact since 1966, when there was nothing like mobile phones or the internet.

German President Joachim Gauck (AFP Photo)

The initiative is seen by many as an attempt to reduce the damage done by Snowden?s revelation to the reputation of the German government ahead of September election. Whatever the politicians motives are, though, they appear to be moving in the right direction, according to the Berlin Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information, Dr. Alexander Dix.

?Data Protection Commissioners all over the world have for long time called for an international treaty to have privacy regulations in place to protect individual privacy and data when surfing the internet and crossing borders. And now the NSA scandal is just the last tip to make it completely clear that we need an international agreement in this sphere. What we are seeing here is really excessive secrecy protecting excessive surveillance and that cannot go on as it has done in the past. We need effective control and we need limits to what the intelligence services are allowed to do,? he told RT.

Lets allow our nation's environmental laws to do the job as they ...

When our nation?s environmental laws were first enacted during the late 1960s and 1970s, this legislation was never intended to be used as an impediment to projects, which were required to meet the basic needs of American society. This is easily illustrated by examining the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, which states it was designed to ?encourage productive and enjoyable harmony between man and his environment.? Its purpose was intended to ?foster and promote the general welfare, to create and maintain conditions under which man and nature can exist in productive harmony and fulfill social, economic and other requirements of the present and future generations of Americans.?

There will always be valid reasons to carefully scrutinize or even oppose new proposals, whether dealing with mining projects, electrical transmission lines, oil and gas pipelines, solar energy generating plants, highways, landfills and cell tower sites. However, there are socioeconomic benefits from the goods and services provided by these projects and as such impacts that may result from these activities are the price we pay to maintain our basic way of life.

All of these projects are required to undergo a rigorous permitting process, which includes opportunities for public comment, before decisions are made on how these projects are allowed to proceed. This is the case for the U. S. Forest Service?s recent preliminary Final Environmental Impact Statement on the Rosemont Copper project, which shows it in compliance with all of the regulations set forth in our nation?s environmental laws. Despite this, Rosemont?s foes have vowed to halt this important project through expensive and time-consuming litigation.

Misuse of our environmental laws has only contributed to America?s increased dependence on foreign sources for the necessities of life. Furthermore, we are now in the sixth year of the greatest economic downturn since the Great Depression. Although economic forecasters claim the recovery is progressing well, there is little evidence of this for many in southern Arizona, who cannot find a job to support their families. However, future employment opportunities provided by the Rosemont project are not the only jobs threatened by the actions of Rosemont?s opponents. The impact will be much greater. Many additional job opportunities as well as potential tax revenues for local governments will also be lost because their actions only reinforce the perception of many that Tucson is not a business friendly community.

History has repeatedly shown that lawsuits fail to halt large industrial projects of this type once they have reached the stage Rosemont Copper has attained in the permitting process. The weight of the scientific, engineering and other data supporting the project?s compliance with local, state and federal regulations is simply too great to overcome.

briggsDo Rosemont?s opponents really believe they can prevail on this issue or is a delay the best they can hope for?

Are our nation?s environmental laws really meant to be used in this manner?

Must those who will ultimately benefit from Rosemont Copper?s efforts to develop a 21st century mine endure many months of additional hardship before this issue is finally resolved in Rosemont?s favor?

What Is A Digital Agency And How Can It Help Your Business ...

Digital agency is a business that offers services on creative, strategic, and technical promotion of online products and services. In this modern era, you can never put up a business and ignore what the internet can do. The best way to survive the competition and cope with the ever changing world in business is to venture online. Why? Most people, no matter how busy they are, they can still and will always find a way to go online and visit their social media websites. This is the best place to find clients, and aside from attracting people online, the internet can also help business owners reach people all over the world. The World Wide Web actually makes the world smaller for all.

With the services of this type of business, your website will be made available for your clients all the time. No more boring and lifeless website for you. A dull website is like an actual store with no salesclerk to serve its clients all the time. There may be a salesclerk sometimes but not knowledgeable enough to promote its products and services. We live in the world where the majority of people depend on the internet in almost anything. Most people are busy working nowadays, they do their shopping, bill payments, and money transfers online. Any type of business will not thrive nowadays without the help of digital agencies. With their assistance, various advantages can be gained.

Making your business present online is essential. The company that you will hire to help you create an interactive website must also be knowledgeable in SEO or search engine optimization. SEO will help you become visible in major search engines in the World Wide Web. They can create effective strategies for your firm in terms of promotion and popularity. Taking your business online is like presenting it to the world. Many companies offer these kinds of services since the demand of it increases every day. If you are planning to hire one, make sure that it suits your preferences. Getting a support that is more than you need will make you spend more as well.

Make sure to find an online advertising agency that provides effective and efficient strategies when promoting your products and services. It must be able to reach customers even to the most remote places. We must admit that the offline methods of advertising are not very effective nowadays. As a wise entrepreneur, you must know how to adapt to changes, and follow the trend so that your business will flourish. Be where the audiences are and give them reasons why they should patronize your products.

Samsung to cut out Google middleman with own developers? conference

http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/07/samsung-to-cut-out-google-middleman-with-own-developers-conference/

I've never thought Android's approach is sustainable. The only company performing with it is Samsung and they deserve the credit for being the dominant force behind Android.

It's not impressive to have large marketshare when you give something away for free. Obviously Android has been touted as a big factor in BBs struggles. Any hit to Android could definitely help BB and android has a lot of weaknesses. The number one performer and driver of the platform Samsung has slowly been distancing themselves from Android. This could prove devastating to android since no other OEM has proven they and sustainable business with it.

BB is showing how hard it can be to transition platforms. Its looking more and more like companies will have to or are already taking strides to move away from Android. It'll be interesting to see if the media and cess pool ;) other forums treat the competition the same way they treat BB.

If Samsung produces a flagship Tizen device would anyone here buy it? Do you think Samsung is thinking of moving father away from Android or just giving themselves more control? Does anyone think this is a move in reaction to the possibility of a chromephone or goog giving preferential treatment to Moto (if I was a goog investor I'd be pretty upset with their so far worthless acquisition of a money-losing hardware company)? Do people think Tizens phones could be successful? Do android apps even matter? Does android even fundamentally matter outside of tech-geek hobbyists who needed a platform to tinker with or as up until now the only viable option for carriers to push outside of apple?
