ROCHESTER, Minn. -- Patients receiving antihistamines to suppress stomach acid are at greater risk of infection from Clostridium difficile, or C. diff, a common cause of diarrhea, particularly in health care settings, Mayo Clinic researchers have found. The study focused on histamine 2 receptor antagonists. The researchers found no significant risk for people taking over-the-counter antihistamine drugs, however. The findings appear in the online journal PLOS ONE.

Researchers reviewed 35 observations based on 33 separate studies involving C. diff and antihistamines used for stomach acid suppressive therapy. The researchers found a clear association between histamine 2 receptor antagonists use and C. diff infection. They say it was especially pronounced and caused the greatest risk for hospitalized patients receiving antibiotics. "It's not clear why these antihistamines increase the risk of C. diff infection, because gastric acid does not affect C. diff spores," says senior author Larry Baddour, M.D., a Mayo infectious diseases expert. "However, it may be that vegetative forms of C.diff, which are normally killed by stomach acid, survive due to use of stomach acid suppressors and cause infection."

Researchers say the study highlights the need for judicious use of histamine 2 receptor antagonists in hospitalized patients, and that reducing the use of these drugs could significantly reduce the risk of C. diff infections.

eBay's Sell it Forward splits auction proceeds with Goodwill

eBay's Sell it Forward splits auction proceeds with Goodwill

eBay's latest initiative is a little different from its more recent efforts that have focused mostly on re-branding and expanding the reach of PayPal. Sell it Forward encourages users to sell their used clothes and donate half the proceeds to Goodwill. The pilot program is currently only available in San Francisco, San Mateo, and Marin, though the company is going out of its way to make the process as painless as possible for those in eligible areas. Instead of creating listings for each item, wannabe auctioneers need only fill the pre-paid mailing bag (provided by eBay) with the clothes and accessories they wish to sell. Everything else will be taken care of for them. Employees will decide if your wares are in decent enough condition to sell, create a listing and, if the item is sold within 14 days, split the proceeds between the "seller" and Goodwill. If the item remains unsold for 14 days it becomes a straight donation to the charity. If you're in one of the trial areas and want to give Sell it Forward a go yourself, hit up the source link.

Uncovering Africa's oldest known penguins

Mar. 26, 2013 ? Africa isn't the kind of place you might expect to find penguins. But one species lives along Africa's southern coast today, and newly found fossils confirm that as many as four penguin species coexisted on the continent in the past. Exactly why African penguin diversity plummeted to the one species that lives there today is still a mystery, but changing sea levels may be to blame, the researchers say.

The fossil findings, described in the March 26 issue of the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, represent the oldest evidence of these iconic tuxedo-clad seabirds in Africa, predating previously described fossils by 5 to 7 million years.

Co-authors Daniel Thomas of the National Museum of Natural History and Dan Ksepka of the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center happened upon the 10-12 million year old specimens in late 2010, while sifting through rock and sediment excavated from an industrial steel plant near Cape Town, South Africa.

Jumbled together with shark teeth and other fossils were 17 bone fragments that the researchers recognized as pieces of backbones, breastbones, wings and legs from several extinct species of penguins.

Based on their bones, these species spanned nearly the full size spectrum for penguins living today, ranging from a runty pint-sized penguin that stood just about a foot tall (0.3 m), to a towering species closer to three feet (0.9 m).

Only one penguin species lives in Africa today -- the black-footed penguin, or Spheniscus demersus, also known as the jackass penguin for its loud donkey-like braying call. Exactly when penguin diversity in Africa started to plummet, and why, is still unclear.

Gaps in the fossil record make it difficult to determine whether the extinctions were sudden or gradual. "[Because we have fossils from only two time periods,] it's like seeing two frames of a movie," said co-author Daniel Ksepka. "We have a frame at five million years ago, and a frame at 10-12 million years ago, but there's missing footage in between."

Humans probably aren't to blame, the researchers say, because by the time early modern humans arrived in South Africa, all but one of the continent's penguins had already died out.

A more likely possibility is that rising and falling sea levels did them in by wiping out safe nesting sites.

Although penguins spend most of their lives swimming in the ocean, they rely on offshore islands near the coast to build their nests and raise their young. Land surface reconstructions suggest that five million years ago -- when at least four penguin species still called Africa home -- sea level on the South African coast was as much as 90 meters higher than it is today, swamping low-lying areas and turning the region into a network of islands. More islands meant more beaches where penguins could breed while staying safe from mainland predators.

But sea levels in the region are lower today. Once-isolated islands have been reconnected to the continent by newly exposed land bridges, which may have wiped out beach nesting sites and provided access to predators.

Although humans didn't do previous penguins in Africa in, we'll play a key role in shaping the fate of the one species that remains, the researchers add.

Numbers of black-footed penguins have declined by 80% in the last 50 years, and in 2010 the species was classified as endangered. The drop is largely due to oil spills and overfishing of sardines and anchovies -- the black-footed penguin's favorite food.

"There's only one species left today, and it's up to us to keep it safe," Thomas said.

Trump shocked by 'stupid' 'Apprentice' decision

NBC

Omarosa made it through yet another episode of the boardroom competition.

By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

Is it too soon to crown Omarosa the winner of the all-star season of "Celebrity Apprentice"? Sure, she might not be the strongest player, and she's already employed some of her signature low-blow tactics, but the reality TV villain has what it takes to make it to the end -- at least if the current boardroom trend continues.

On Sunday night, for the second week in a row, Omarosa was arguably the weakest link on Team Power, and the project manager wasn't shy about saying so. And despite that fact, for the second week in a row, the project manager didn't bring her back to the boardroom for a shot at getting fired.

What gives? Why would project manager Claudia Jordon make the same mistake that sent La Toya Jackson packing before her? Not even the big boss had the answer to that question.

"In the history of ?The Apprentice' -- 13 seasons, top show -- I?ve been surprised, really, a few times," Donald Trump said. "The most surprised ever, EVER was when Omarosa didn't get brought back in the last one with La Toya. That was shocking. I think the second (most shocking) is that you didn't bring back Omarosa (this time). ? I think it?s a stupid decision."

But that wasn't Claudia's only stupid decision on Sunday night's show. In addition to not bringing Omarosa back, she thought it would be a good idea to put Lil Jon on the chopping block -- the man executives called the star of the most recent challenge.

Ultimately, it wasn't really important who Claudia picked to stand beside her. According to Trump, it wouldn't have changed her fate.

"If Omarosa were brought back, it wouldn't have mattered," he insisted. "You're the project manager, you failed."

So Claudia was fired.

Do you think Omarosa will ever get fired on "All-Star Celebrity Apprentice"? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

(AP Photo/Gene J. Puskar, File)

(AP) ? Jerry Sandusky said in interview excerpts broadcast Monday that a key witness against him misinterpreted him showering with a young boy in Penn State football team facilities more than a decade ago.

Sandusky told documentary filmmaker John Ziegler, in recordings played on NBC's "Today" show, that he does not understand how Mike McQueary concluded "that sex was going on" when he witnessed Sandusky showering with a boy in 2001.

"That would have been the last thing I would have thought about," Sandusky said during what Ziegler described as 3? hours of interviews. "I would have thought maybe fooling around or something like that."

McQueary, a graduate assistant in 2001, testified at trial that he heard "skin-on-skin smacking sound" and had no doubt he was witnessing anal sex.

In a transcript posted online, Ziegler said he asked Sandusky about McQueary's claim he made eye contact with Sandusky at the end of that incident, but Sandusky said he did not recall seeing McQueary or even know who had made the complaint until years later.

Sandusky acknowledged, however, that McQueary avoided contact with him about a decade later ? around the time the investigation against Sandusky was heating up.

McQueary's father, John McQueary, declined comment, and there was no answer at McQueary's lawyer's office early Monday. Mike McQueary has filed a defamation and whistleblower lawsuit against Penn State over how he was treated after Sandusky's arrest.

The boy, identified as Victim 2 in court records, was not a witness at trial. A team of four lawyers has said they are representing Victim 2 and posted online audio recordings of voicemails purportedly from Sandusky and left for the boy.

The lawyers ? Joel Feller, Matt Casey, Justine Andronici and Andrew Shubin ? issued a statement Monday saying Victim 2 and their other clients "have heard enough from Jerry Sandusky" and are focusing on "healing and holding Penn State accountable for choosing to protect Jerry Sandusky and themselves instead of protecting children from years of horrific sexual abuse."

Sandusky also told Ziegler he was not sure whether head coach Joe Paterno, who was fired after Sandusky's November 2011 arrest, would have let him keep coaching if he suspected Sandusky was a pedophile. Sandusky was investigated by university police for a separate shower incident in 1998, but remained one of Paterno's top assistants through 1999.

"If he absolutely thought I was, I'd say no," Sandusky said in the audio recording. "If he had a suspicion, I don't know the answer to that."

Sandusky said he did not touch the boys inappropriately, Ziegler wrote.

"Yeah, I hugged them," Sandusky said, according to Ziegler. "Maybe I tested boundaries. Maybe I shouldn't have showered with them. Yeah, I tickled them. I looked at them as being probably younger than even some of them were. But I didn't do any of these horrible acts and abuse these young people. I didn't violate them. I didn't harm them."

Ziegler, who is working on a defense of Paterno, said the interviews were conducted during three sessions, and told the AP on Monday that additional excerpts will be posted online over the coming days. The transcripts were posted by Ziegler on his site, www.framingpaterno.com.

He describes himself as an author, broadcaster, commentator and maker of films, including the 2009 movie "Media Malpractice: How Obama Got Elected and Palin Was Targeted."

Along with the Sandusky interview material, Ziegler posted a piece about himself that anticipates critical media coverage of his background. As an example, he noted he has been "fired in radio lots of times for saying things which seem outrageous."

"This is actually true. It is totally and completely irrelevant to the findings of my findings on the Sandusky scandal and whether Joe Paterno was railroaded by you, but yes, this charge is mostly true," Ziegler wrote.

Wick Sollers, a Paterno family lawyer, said in a statement released Sunday that Sandusky had an opportunity to testify at trial but "chose not to do so."

"The Paterno family would prefer to remain silent on this matter, but they feel it is important to make it clear that they had no role in obtaining or releasing this recording," Sollers said. "Moreover, they believe that any attempt to use this recording as a defense of Joe Paterno is misguided and inappropriate."

Penn State issued a statement that said Sandusky's latest remarks "continue to open wounds for his victims, and the victims of child sexual abuse everywhere."

Sandusky, 69, is serving a 30- to 60-year prison sentence after being convicted last year of 45 counts of child sexual abuse. He maintains his innocence and is pursuing appeals.

Pakistan's Musharraf vows return despite risks

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ? Former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf says he will follow through with his plans to return to his homeland despite risks of arrest and other threats.

Musharraf, who has been living in self-exile in London and Dubai, faces possible arrest in Pakistan in connection with the killing of an ex-prime minister.

But Musharraf told journalists Saturday in Dubai that he will return to take part in May elections despite the "fear of the unknown," including possible death threats.

He plans to travel Sunday to Karachi. Journalists and supporters of Musharraf's All Pakistan Muslim League are expected to accompany him.

Musharraf took power in a 1999 coup. He faces charges of conspiring to assassinate ex-premier Benazir Bhutto, who was killed in 2007.

Musharraf has called the charges baseless.

(AP) ? A fast start and a strong finish gave Cincinnati an important win for its NCAA tournament resume.

Sean Kilpatrick scored 17 points to lead the Bearcats past Providence 61-44 on Wednesday in a Big East tournament game between teams desperate to improve their postseason credentials.

"Great effort by our guys on the defensive end of the floor," Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin said. "We outrebound people despite our lack of size, and so credit to the kids in the uniforms. They've got great toughness, and they're really committed to winning."

JaQuon Parker added 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Bearcats (22-10), who might have solidified an NCAA tournament berth with the victory. No. 9 seed Cincinnati advanced to a quarterfinal matchup Thursday with fifth-ranked Georgetown, the tournament's top seed.

The Hoyas won at Cincinnati 62-55 on Feb. 15.

"We know they're a great team, but like we talked about earlier, we're a great team as well," Kilpatrick said. "Especially the way we're playing defense the way we are. We're a team that's hungry. We're a team that's not going to back down from anyone, and we're going to come out and give our best fight every night."

Kadeem Batts led the eighth-seeded Friars (17-14) with 14 points and eight rebounds, but Bryce Cotton ? the conference's leading scorer at 19.6 points per game ? was held to 12 on 5-for-15 shooting. He missed all seven 3-point attempts, and Providence went 1 for 16 from beyond the arc.

"Yeah, gross," coach Ed Cooley said.

Wearing special uniforms with neon trim and hideous camouflage-patterned shorts, Cincinnati hounded the Friars into 28 percent shooting from the field (18 for 64).

Both teams struggled to score for most of the second half, though.

Trying to erase an early 18-point deficit, Providence cut it to 43-37 with 5:09 remaining on a tough layup by Cotton. Kilpatrick answered with a 3-pointer, and then Parker grabbed Kilpatrick's off-target 3 and converted a three-point play for his first points of the second half.

Two more free throws by Parker extended Cincinnati's cushion to 51-39 with 3:54 to go, and the Friars never got closer than eight again. Kilpatrick, from nearby Yonkers, sealed it with a three-point play that made it a 14-point game at the 1:41 mark.

"I think our pressure affected them, no doubt," Cronin said. "Their lack of depth probably, and our pressure defense."

In their final chance for an NCAA tournament push, both teams entered this second-round matchup eager to make a splash.

Cincinnati appeared to be in better position, with a 20-win season already secured and an RPI ranking of 49. But the Bearcats faded late in the regular season, dropping six of their final nine games, while Providence became one of the best teams in the Big East once the calendar turned to February.

The surprising Friars, ranked 83rd in the RPI, won seven of their last nine conference games, including a 54-50 victory at home over then-No. 17 Cincinnati on Feb. 6 behind 25 points and nine rebounds from Batts. The teams tied for ninth place in the Big East at 9-9, but Providence came to New York knowing it probably needed a deep run at Madison Square Garden to have a shot at an at-large bid and its first NCAA tournament trip since 2004.

"I think our program has come a long way in the last year," Cooley said. "But our program isn't ready for that moment yet. ... Providence hasn't won in this building in I don't know how many years. So, it's my job. I need to do a better job educating our kids on how to play in the moment, and we're just not there yet."

Instead, the Friars will likely be left hoping for a chance to play in the NIT. Cooley said the team would not except an invitation to the CBI or CIT.

"Today is not indicative of the future for us. We just had a bad game, and they played well," Cooley said. "I don't know if we have more basketball games left in us but if we don't, I'm proud of what we've achieved this year."

Early on, it was the deeper Bearcats who took charge as Providence came out cold.

The Friars, picked last in the preseason coaches' poll after going 4-14 in league play each of the past three years, missed 10 of their first 11 shots and opened 3 for 22 from the field ? including 0 of 5 from 3-point range. Meanwhile, the Bearcats started 6 for 8 en route to a 26-8 lead following Parker's second consecutive 3 with 6:23 left in the first half.

"I thought their early pressure bothered us, put us on our heels," Cooley said. "I thought my young guys were a little nervous to start."

Providence called timeout and regrouped, holding Cincinnati to one field goal the rest of the half as the Friars closed on a 15-5 run to go into the locker room down 31-23.

This was the first meeting between these schools in the Big East tournament. Cincinnati went all the way to the championship game last year before losing to Louisville, then reached the round of 16 in the NCAAs. The Bearcats have won their first game in each of the last four Big East tournaments.

"We're not as big and strong as the Cincinnati teams of the past," Cronin said. "We're more faster, quicker, more athletic."

Providence has lost five straight Big East tournament games and 10 of its last 11. The Friars were routed by Seton Hall 79-47 last year.

BlinkFeed: Inside the HTC One's home screen reader

BlinkFeed on the HTC One

It's one of the more controversial moves a smartphone manufacturer has made in recent memory. HTC has pared down the out-of-box home screen experience, instead going with a single traditional Android panel, while opening up a world of news, updates and features, that's just a single swipe away.

This is BlinkFeed.

You could say BlinkFeed looks a lot like Flipboard -- and you'd be right. The slight difference in animations notwithstanding, what you've got is an extremely capable (if a bit limited in scope) feed reader. News, social networking updates, the ability to post your status -- it's all right there.

So why's it controversial? Unlike apps like Pulse or Flipboard or even Google Currents, which are traditional applications, BlinkFeed is baked into the phone itself, as much a part of the home screen as the home screen itself. It's there, whether you plan on using it or not.

Practical Advice For Your Commercial Real Estate Dealings ...

While entering the world of commercial real estate can be frustrating for beginners, often it can be difficult for even the most experienced buyer, too. In the following article, you are going to be provided with information that is meant to help ease some of the stress you may feel from your commercial real estate venture.

It?s important to place importance on the relationship yourself and your investors have with private lenders who help you buy your real estate. Make sure you have a big network because there?s a lot of property that goes unnoticed and is sold, you want to increase your chances of making deals by always being informed.

Figure pest control into your rented or leased commercial real estate property costs. This is important in less desirable locations where rodents and/or bugs are an issue. Have your rental agent inform you of any associated policies for pest control.

Know that there are many different kinds of brokers when it comes to commercial real estate. Some are full service brokers, and they work on behalf of landlords and tenants. Others are agents who represent only tenants. If you are a tenant, you may be much better off by using a broker who only works with tenants as they have a lot more experience with successful tenant representation.

It is advisable to go bigger when investing money pertaining to commercial real estate. You may only have planned to buy a five-unit building, but managing 10 or even 50 units will not be any harder. Even a building with five units needs to be commercially financed the same way as a larger building. However, the more units a building has, the less money you?ll pay per unit.

Even the most advanced commercial property hunter can be challenged when looking for a new investment. For that reason articles like this exist to make it a bit easier when thinking about buying commercial property.

(AP) ? The head of Sierra Leone's Anti-Corruption Commission says that 29 government health officials will appear in court on corruption charges for having allegedly defrauded the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation's vaccine program.

Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara told The Associated Press that the government's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Kisito Sheku Daoh, six other medical doctors and 22 health officials are charged with defrauding the Gates Foundation's Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization Fund of $523,000. He said all those charged are out on bail and scheduled to appear in court on March 18.

The Gates Foundation's immunization fund has suspended payments of $6 million to Sierra Leone over the allegations of misuse of funds.

The immunization fund has disbursed more than $27 million to Sierra Leone since 2001.

Amazon?s rumored Kindle smartphone could be delayed

By Joseph Ax NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York City's ban on large sugary drinks from restaurants, movie theaters and other establishments was invalidated on Monday by a state judge as "arbitrary and capricious," a day before it was to take effect. The 11-hour decision was a blow to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, whose top lawyer quickly vowed to appeal. Bloomberg has made public health a cornerstone of his administration, with laws prohibiting smoking in restaurants, bars and parks; banning trans fats; and requiring chain restaurants to post calorie counts. ...

Appetite suppression pills: Good or bad?

Mar. 8, 2013 ? New products are released each year promising to help buyers suppress their appetite to lose weight, but these over-the-counter concoctions may not be as effective as more natural approaches.

A web search of ingredients getting attention recently, like Hoodia gordonii or green coffee bean extract, brings up countless products that cannot always be trusted, according to University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Nutrition Sciences Professor and Chair Timothy Garvey, M.D.

"There are little or no rigorous data addressing the efficacy of these sorts of compounds," Garvey said. "People buying these products are likely to be wasting money."

Instead, Garvey added that patients with obesity complications should seek direction from their health care providers.

"There are proven lifestyle modification programs and medications that can be helpful," Garvey added.

There are steps one can take to naturally lower appetite. UAB Wellness Director Lauren Whitt, Ph.D., recommended starting the day with protein.

"It has long been suggested that people eat breakfast to help with hunger throughout the day, but your breakfast must have protein," Whitt said. "Egg whites or low-fat yogurt are excellent sources of protein that will keep you feeling fuller longer because it takes the body more time to digest and absorb them."

Later in the day, before hunger strikes, Whitt said a portion of an unsaturated fat can do the trick.

"Oleic acid, which is found in unsaturated fats, helps quell hunger," Whitt said. "It may sound counterintuitive, but this is healthy fat, so snack on a couple tablespoons of peanut butter or an ounce of nuts."

Lastly, Whitt said to toss a certain citrus into the mix.

"Eating grapefruit between meals, or with a meal, helps lower the insulin levels in your body," Whitt explained. "Insulin regulates your blood sugar and fat metabolism, so keeping insulin levels in check helps you fight the urge to grab a quick, sugary snack."

Spymaster's Orcasub is a $2 million submarine for two

Spymaster's Orcasub is a $2 million submarine for two

Sure, you could use an ROV to feel like a regular Jacques Cousteau (or James Cameron, for that matter), but nothing beats the real deal: a personal submarine. UK department store Harrods used its Technology Showcase 2.0 event to highlight a mockup of Spymaster's Orcasub: a made-to-order $2 million submarine that can drop up to 2,000 feet into the briny depths. A total of two passengers can climb aboard the 4-ton, 22 foot-long submersible thanks to a pair of 360-degree domes that offer 80 hours of life support for each occupant. The battery-powered sub is piloted by using two foot pedals and a joystick, and handles somewhat like an aircraft since it was built with the principles of flight in mind.

Orcasub comes outfitted with sonar for collision avoidance, a digital long-range communications system and a 60,000 lumen LED lighting rig. What you see above is just a miniature, but Spymaster is taking orders for the real, full-size McCoy. In fact, folks who'd like to dive deeper can put in a request for pricier models, with the most expensive version nabbing explorers a maximum depth of 6,000 feet for a cool $9.32 million. If you ask us, this sounds like a perfect escape vehicle for any luxury yacht worth its salt. Hit the source link for Pocket-lint's photo gallery of the craft.

SingTel opens tech center in Israel

Singapore giant?s partnership with Amdocs to help local startups get footing in Asia market.

Singapore Telecommunications has partnered with software provider Amdocs to open its first development center in Israel, which should help local blue-and-white startups get a better foothold in Asia. SingTel L!feLabs @ Israel with Amdocs is the first such collaboration in Israel by a service provider from Asia Pacific and will serve as a gateway for local start-ups into the fastest-growing region in the world. Three years ago, Amdocs partnered with AT&T to launch an innovation center which enables Israeli companies to develop products and solutions with Amdocs for the US telecommunications giant. Similarly, Asia?s leading communications group said the new center will focus on reaching out to the local community of entrepreneurs to develop capabilities in key areas as well as conduct proof of concepts and the eventual commercialization of innovative technologies, products and services in the 26 countries where the SingTel Group operates. Last year, SingTel bought Israeli mobile ad company Amobee, and in the past has invested in mobile-focused startups Everything.me and Moment.me. ?We have been extremely satisfied with the wealth of talent in Israel. We experienced this through our recently acquired global mobile advertising company Amobee which has a technology center in Israel, as well as through our venture capital investments in two Israeli companies in the mobile Internet business. This has propelled us to open this new development center to scout for new growth engines for SingTel,? said Allen Lew, Chief Executive Officer of Group Digital L!fe, SingTel. ?We believe that this innovation and development center is a win-win-win opportunity which will benefit all those involved: the SingTel Group, Amdocs and young Israeli companies and start-ups,? said Eli Gelman, chief executive officer of Amdocs Management. In addition to the development center, SingTel will invest in three key areas in Israel: Investment in young Israeli start-up companies; working with Israeli academic or research institutes by funding studies conducted by the country?s universities or working on ideas created in such institutions; and working with incubators and the angel community to look for interesting business and technology ideas from Israel. ?We are embedding ourselves in one of the leading innovation hubs of the world. We are committed to engaging the local innovation community. Our financial investment in Israel will be determined according to the value of projects. In SingTel, we have a corporate venture fund of S$200 million. Part of this fund will also reach Israel,? said Lew.

Google vs. Google: Chrome OS Could Face Pressure from Android

From Rumors
March 7, 2013 - 9:29am

When Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) created the Chrome OS platform, it hoped to build the next great operating system. The company had no idea this would lead to internal competition between the two platforms. Right now, Chrome OS is the company's dominant system for notebooks. Acer, Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) and Samsung are among the firms that have given their support. According to DigiTimes, Hewlett-Packard and Samsung are also "aggressively seeking cooperation from Google for Android-based notebooks," creating a bit of competition between Chrome and Android. This is not the first time that a tech company has been faced with a challenge of this magnitude. For example, Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) regularly touts the iPad as a triple-A laptop replacement while still attempting to sell various MacBooks that are two, three and four times more expensive. Unlike Chrome and Android, however, Apple's operating systems -- iOS and OS X -- do not compete on the same playing field. ...

Could?there be?all-German Champ. League final?

The question in the headline is a bit absurd. The final UEFA Champions League bracket not drawn until after the quarterfinals (a round later than previous years), meaning we won?t know if Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund will be able to avoid each other until Wembley. They may have to play for the right to get there.

So let?s engage in a bid of bad form and rephrase the question. Which two teams are most likely to reach Wembley, and are they both German?

See how cumbersome that is? Regardless, you get the point.

There?s little doubt Bayern Munich?s among the best teams in Europe. Given Barcelona?s recent struggles, Bayern seem to be on their own level. That doesn?t guarantee they?ll reach the final, but they seem the safest bet.

Among the tournaments other contenders are Barcelona and Milan, who meet next week. Paris Saint-Germain has the talent, M?laga?s defending can keep them in any match,?while Juventus has shown the steel to compete with anybody. And, of course, there?s the Jos? Mourinho-led Real Madrid, whose contenders? credentials were affirmed by their win at Old Trafford.

But none of those teams look as good as Borussia Dortmund, a team whose Tuesday thumping of Shakhtar Donetsk forces us to consider the European landscape. This is a team sitting on two straight German titles that bested Real Madrid and Manchester City in group play. Their 3-0 win over Shakhtar?was by far the most impressive result an opponent?s posted on the Ukrainians, a team that played Juventus twice.

If you?re judging teams by what happens on the field ? whether that be the team?s isolated accomplishments or comparative results ? Borussia Dortmund look as good as anybody. And their talent supports that stature. Robert Lewandowski?s an elite scorer. Mario G?tze and Marco Reus are menaces at the next level. Ilkay Gundogen is one of the better central midfielders in Europe, while Mats Hummels and Neven Subotic form a formidable pair in central defense.

If you?re reading this, you probably already know Dortmund?s talented. But you also may not be used to the idea of ?new? teams being contenders for Champions League. BVB is obviously not a brand new club (they won the title in 1997), but they?re also not Barcelona. Or Manchester United. Or Real Madrid, Bayern Munich or any of the other teams we?re used to competing for Champions League. They are, in that narrow sense, kind of new.

But look around Europe and you?ll see the symptoms of a continental shift. England will be out of Champions League in a weak. Italy has waned. Paris Saint-Germain?s still a project, and neither Barcelona nor Real Madrid are as strong as they?ve been in recent years.

And in the interim, Germany?s grown. Borussia Dortmund may have just lost a one-sided match to Bayern Munich, but it?s becoming and more clear that Bayern?s of another world. They?ve lapped the field, for now.

But as for that field, Borussia Dortmund may be the head of the pack. At least, their results hint they are.

So are we en route to an all-German final? It?s too soon to tell. But does Germany have the two best teams in Europe??That?s an easier question to answer.
