Central Asian migrants change the face of Moscow

MOSCOW (AP) ? Timur Bulgakov has a black belt in karate, two university degrees, a powerful SUV and a small yet thriving construction company. The 28-year-old's success is impressive for a Muslim migrant from Uzbekistan whose first job in Moscow 10 years ago was as a delivery boy.

But his story is no longer that unusual.

The old Moscow, populated largely by Slavs, is rapidly giving way to a multi-ethnic city where Muslims from Central Asia are the fastest growing sector of the population. And they are changing the face of Moscow as their numbers rise and they move up the career ladder, taking on more visible roles in society.

Muslim women wearing hijabs are a growing sight on the capital's shopping streets. Bearded men sport Muslim skullcaps and hang trinkets with Koranic verses in their cars. Many more are non-practicing Muslims who blend in with secular attire, although their darker skin, accented speech and foreign customs often provoke frowns from native Muscovites. Meanwhile, their children ? some born and raised in the capital ? throng kindergartens and schools.

Russia's Federal Migration Service estimates that about 9.1 million foreigners arrived in Russia to work in 2011. More than a third came from three impoverished Central Asian countries that were once part of the Soviet Union: About 2 million from Uzbekistan, 1 million from Tajikistan and more than 500,000 from Kyrgyzstan. Local experts say the number of Central Asian arrivals is at least twice as high. And hundreds of thousands of Central Asians have already acquired Russian passports and are off the migration services' radar.

The Central Asian migration has been the driving force in boosting Russia's Muslim population to more than 20 million, from some 14 million 10 years ago ? a phenomenon experts call one of the most radical demographic makeovers Russia has ever seen.

"Today, we're standing on the verge of a powerful demographic explosion, a great migration period equal to the one that took place in the first centuries A.D.," said Vyacheslav Mikhailov, a former minister for ethnic issues and a presidential adviser on ethnic policies.

Muslims are expected to account for 19 percent of Russia's population by 2030, up from 14 percent of the current population of 142 million, according to the U.S. government's National Intelligence Council report on global trends published this month.

"Russia's greatest demographic challenge could well be integrating its rapidly growing ethnic Muslim population in the face of a shrinking ethnic Russian population," the report said. The changing ethnic mix "already appears to be a source of growing social tensions."

By the most conservative estimates, 2 million Muslims now live in Moscow, a city of nearly 12 million.

Polls show that nearly half of Russians dislike migrants from Central Asia and Russia's Caucasus ? another source of Muslim migration. They have become the bogeymen of Russian nationalists, accused of stealing jobs, forming ethnic gangs and disrespecting Russian customs.

"If you build a mosque in downtown Moscow, slaughter sheep on your holiday and impose your traditions on us, no one will want you as a neighbor," said Dmitry Demushkin, a veteran Russian neo-Nazi skinhead who heads a nationalist party.

Central Asian labor migrants for years have filled the lowest paying jobs, working as janitors, street cleaners, construction workers, vendors at outdoor markets and unlicensed cab drivers whose run-down cars are popularly known as "jihad taxis." Many live in trailers on construction sites, in squalid basements and overcrowded flophouses or sleep inside their cars. The uncertain legal status of many of the migrant workers has left them vulnerable to abuse and exploitation from employers. They also have fallen victim to xenophobic attacks.

But in recent years, they are increasingly becoming more established members of the work force. And a significant minority, like Bulgakov, now run their own successful businesses.

The undisputed star among Russia's Central Asian business figures is ethnic Uzbek Alisher Usmanov: His interests in mining, telecoms and Internet startups have made him one of Russia's richest men, with a fortune estimated at $18.1 billion, and he is the co-owner of British soccer club Arsenal.

Filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov, who was born in Kazakhstan and educated in Uzbekistan, has directed some of Russia's most top grossing movies. Recently he moved to Hollywood, directing this year's "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" and before that "Wanted," a 2008 action flick with Angelina Jolie.

Uzbek native Mirzakarim Norbekov has penned half a dozen bestsellers based on the medical teachings of Muslim medieval scholar Avicenna, who was born in what is now Uzbekistan. His medical training center in Moscow charges hundreds of dollars for short healing courses.

And while the Central Asian influx has caused frictions, there are also abundant signs of non-Muslim Muscovites embracing things seen as quintessentially Central Asian. Uzbek restaurants, fast-food joints and clay-oven bakeries that churn out round flat-cakes and meat pies have become ubiquitous; fashionistas sport oriental silk scarves and pashminas that resemble hijabs; and many ethnic Russian housewives buy halal meat believing it to be healthy and devoid of chemical preservatives.

The trend may have deep roots in Russian history: Unlike most West European capitals, Moscow has absorbed Muslims into its population for centuries.

The principality of Moscow emerged as a regional power some 700 years ago, when the Golden Horde, a state dominated by Mongols and Muslim Tatars, controlled parts of what is now southern Russia, the Caucasus and Central Asia. As Moscow took over the Horde's territories and invaded lands that once had been conquered by Arabs, Persians and Turks, Muslim nobles became part of the Russian elite and Muslims were free to practice their faith under the czars.

Novelist Vladimir Nabokov proudly wrote that his aristocratic family descended from Nabak, an illegitimate son of Genghis Khan. Composer Sergei Rachmaninoff and writer Mikhail Bulgakov were the offspring of Tatar nobles.

"Muslims are not newcomers here, and all the current problems are temporary," said Vladilen Bokov, a devout Muslim and member of the Public Chamber, which advises the Kremlin on social issues.

The Central Asians are far from a homogeneous group: Kyrgyz are proud of their militant nomadic heritage, while Uzbeks and Tajiks extol their cultures that produced poets and scholars who contributed to medieval Muslim civilization.

Czarist armies finished the conquest of Central Asia by early 20th century and Stalinist purges decimated their elites. The Soviet era reshaped their economies and agriculture and made "Russification" a key to success for several generations of their best and brightest. In the 1980s, Central Asian conscripts became a majority in the Soviet Army as birth rates among ethnic Russians plummeted.

Communist Moscow tried to win sympathies of Central Asians ? and uproot their Muslim traditions ? by building schools and universities. Their graduates are still qualified to work as bank clerks, computer engineers, artists and medical doctors in Russia. Employers often praise them for their hard work, career ambitions and indifference to alcohol ? Russia's proverbial scourge.

The 1991 Soviet collapse was followed in their overpopulated republics by ineffective economic reforms, political unrest a resurgence of Islamic traditions and a gradual loss of Soviet mentality. But the number of Russian speakers remains high. They visit Russia visa-free and can stay here for up to three months, or longer if they get work or residence permits.

Construction company owner Bulgakov has faced his share of hardships.

Square-jawed and burly, he recalled over a cup of steaming tea how he stole some undercooked buckwheat from a dormitory kitchen several days after losing a job. He lost another job after beating up his supervisor for calling him a "churka," a pejorative term for Central Asians. Bulgakov said that during a hospital visit he heard a doctor reproaching his ethnic Russian wife for failing to "find a decent Russian man."

After several years of selling construction paint, Bulgakov started his own company.

Now his company renovates apartments of affluent Muscovites and works on occasional contracts with the Defense Ministry. He also has joined Kremlin's United Russia party and wants to run for office in the Moscow suburb of Ivanteevka where he lives with his wife and two children.

Bulgakov, who sports a white-gold ring with a sparkling diamond, has this advice for fellow Central Asians seeking a better life in Moscow.

"If you want to work, just work," he said, "If you don't, you'll find a thousand excuses ? 'I am being oppressed, abused, beaten.'"

TigerLogic Acquires Storycode For Up To $7.25M To Bolster How Brands Reach Mobile Users

Screen Shot 2012-12-28 at 9.03.18 PMTigerLogic, a company with a market cap of about $56 million that provides data management and app development solutions for enterprises, said it agreed to acquire Portland mobile developer Storycode for up to $7.25 million in cash and stock today. The Irvine-based company says it will integrate Storycode’s technology into its social visualization platform called Postano. Yes, “social visualization” platform is a little vague, but basically Postano lets brands embed widgets with content froms social networks on their sites. They also offer an internal dashboard that lets clients monitor what people are saying about them on Twitter or Facebook, and they can also help with creating custom Facebook tabs and apps. Storycode has a mobile app publishing platform that media companies like Thomson Reuters, USA Today, NBC and CBS use to create iPhone and iPad apps. The mobile publishing platform will plug right into TigerLogic’s Postano product. According to an SEC filing, each share of Storycode’s stock will be converted into $6.75 million worth of TigerLogic’s stock. On top of that, a single share of preferred stock in Storycode will get converted into the right to receive $250,000. TigerLogic is also giving Storycode $100,000 in bridge financing and is taking on up to $150,000 in the company’s liabilities. Storycode actually has been through one previous acquisition. It was previously called FreeRange Communications after it spun out of Handmark in 2011. The company changed its name to Storycode last May after acquiring a Portland-based mobile agency.

Cave dwelling nettle discovered in China

Dec. 28, 2012 ? South West China, Myanmar and Northern Vietnam contain one of the oldest exposed outcrops of limestone in the world. Within this area are thousands of caves and gorges. It is only recently that botanists have sought to explore the caves for plants. This exploration is yielding many new species new to science, that are known only from these habitats.

The current study was published in the open access journal PhytoKeys.

Kew botanist and nettle expert Alex Monro says, "When my Chinese colleague Wei Yi-Gang from the Guangxi Institute of Botany first mentioned cave-dwelling plants to me, I thought that he was mis-translating a Chinese word into English. When we stepped into our first cave, Yangzi cave, I was spell-bound. It had an eerie moonscape look to it and all I could see were clumps of plants in the nettle family growing in very dark condition."

The plants do not grow in complete darkness but do grow in extremely low light levels, deep within the entrance caverns of the caves (sometimes, in as little as 0.04% full sunlight). The British and Chinese authors have been collecting plants from the Nettle family in this limestone landscape for several years and have just published a paper describing three new species, one from a cave and another two from deep gorges.

The cave-dwelling nettle species in question, was found growing in two caves in the Guangxi province of China. Of the species discovered in gorges, one is known from an unusual and striking rock mineral formation called petaloid travertine. Petaloid travertine is a form of limestone deposited by mineral springs that over time forms large petals of rock, in this case clinging to the vertical walls of a gorge.

These plants are members of a genus of Nettles known as Pilea, that is believed to have over 700 species Worldwide, up to one third of which may remain undescribed.

Geminid meteor shower reigns in the night sky (+video)

Geminid meteor shower: Last night's annual meteor shower was a crowd pleaser. The Gemind meteor shower comes from debris shed by a 3-mile-wide? asteroid called 3200 Phaethon.

By Mike Wall,?Space.com / December 14, 2012

The annual Geminid meteor shower peaked overnight last night (Dec. 13), dazzling skywatchers around the world with a bounty of brilliant shooting stars.

The Geminids' peak was supposed to be good this year, as it occurred in a sky left dark by the new moon. Experts had predicted that viewers in rural areas might see 100 meteors per hour early Friday morning (Dec. 14) ? and perhaps even more.

Judging by the reactions of some SPACE.com readers, the Geminids did not disappoint.

"What an incredible show we had here!" Sean Parker, who watched the shower early Friday just west of Tucson, Ariz., told SPACE.com via email. "I was able to see about 50 per hour." [Photos: Geminid Meteors of 2012]

Parker constructed a gorgeous composite image of about 30 frames, which captured dozens of shooting stars streaking through the skies above a saguaro-studded desert mountain.

"This image took a lot of work, as I had to scroll through about 400 frames and find which frames had shooting stars in them, then cut out every meteor and blend," Parker said.

Skywatchers on the other side of the world were enthralled by the Geminids as well.

"Awesome experience," said Mumbai, India-based Swaroop Hangal, who also captured a photo of a fast-moving meteor.

"Today, I had planned to see 50 streaks and then quit with or without a pic," Hangal said. "Had almost lost hope when I could capture the 50th one, just between Betelgeuse at the bottom & Alhena in the Gemini constellation."

The Geminids? so named because they appear to emanate from the constellation Gemini (The Twins) ? are one of the most dependably impressive annual meteor showers.

They result when Earth plows through debris shed by a 3-mile-wide (5 kilometers) asteroid called 3200 Phaethon. These tiny particles burn up in our planet's atmosphere, leaving bright streaks in the sky to commemorate their passing.

The Geminids' source is unusual for?meteor showers, which are typically caused by streams of sloughed-off comet particles. Debris streams from the famous Halley's Comet, for example, produce the Orionids every October and the Eta Aquarids, which peak in early May.

If you missed the Geminid peak last night, don't fret; you still have a few days to catch the shower this year. The Geminids should linger until Sunday (Dec. 16) or so before fizzling out completely.

Editor's Note: If you take a photo of this year's Geminids that you'd like to share with SPACE.com for a possible story or gallery, please send it, along with your comments, to spacephotos@space.com.

NEWTOWN, Connecticut (Reuters) - Even as they buried more victims of the second-deadliest school shooting in U.S. history on Thursday, residents of Newtown, Connecticut, sought ways to pressure U.S. leaders to restrict access to guns and a White House task force on violence met.

Funerals were scheduled for a half-dozen people, some as young as 6 years old, who were shot and killed on Friday by a heavily armed 20-year-old man who attacked an elementary school with an assault rifle.

Hundreds of mourners packed into a Thursday morning funeral for Benjamin Wheeler, 6, filing into the gray stone Trinity Episcopal Church past two rows of Boy Scouts who lined up outside as a flag-bearing honor guard.

The December 14 rampage in which 28 people were killed, including 20 children and the gunman, has sparked new discussion on tightening gun laws, a thorny political issue in the United States, which has a strong culture of individual gun ownership.

Vice President Joe Biden convened the first meeting of a new White House task force charged by President Barack Obama with drawing up a plan to tackle gun violence in the United States.

"You know better than anyone what is needed out there," he told the group, which included Attorney General Eric Holder, other cabinet members and police officials from around the country. "The president is absolutely committed to keeping the promise that he will act."

As a senator, Biden authored a crime bill in 1994 that included a temporary ban on assault weapons.

After the meeting, Holder was scheduled to travel to Newtown to meet privately with law enforcement officials investigating the massacre.

WAITING ON THE NRA

The National Rifle Association, the powerful firearms lobby that has long resisted any effort to restrict gun ownership, signaled this week it may be ready to bend. It said it would offer "meaningful contributions" to prevent future such massacres at an event in Washington on Friday.

The group, which kept silent for five days after the shooting, plans to continue its media push over the weekend with its chief executive, Wayne LaPierre, due to appear on the television talk show "Meet the Press" on Sunday.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, formerly Obama's chief of staff, worried publicly that the NRA would not break its past patterns.

"I fully expect the NRA to do exactly what they always do," Emanuel said at a press conference at Chicago City Hall, where he called for a ban on assault weapons of the kind used in the Newtown killings.

"I expect the Washington gun lobby and the gun lobbies around to do exactly what they always do, which is to try to apply political pressure so you ignore the overwhelming public opinion."

In Newtown, a few dozen residents met at the town library on Wednesday night to discuss ways they could influence the national debate. Senator Richard Blumenthal told the group it was time for a "seismic change" in gun policies.

"This horrific tragedy has changed America, in the way that it is ready to stop the spread of gun violence," he said.

The shooter, Adam Lanza, used guns that were legally purchased and registered to his mother Nancy, his first victim in Friday's attack.

A funeral home outside Connecticut plans to claim her body, The New Haven Register reported, citing Connecticut's chief medical examiner, Dr. H. Wayne Carver II.

Democrats in Congress who favor gun control have called for quick votes on measures to ban assault weapons or high-capacity magazines, hoping that the slaying of the 6- and 7-year olds in Newtown might be a tipping point to win over more lawmakers.

The backlash against guns has not been limited to lawmakers. Retailers including Wal-Mart Stores Inc took down an website about Bushmaster rifles, the sort used in the attack. Dick's Sporting Goods pulled all guns from its store closest to the massacre in Newtown, about 80 miles northeast of New York City.

Private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management LP this week said it would sell the Freedom Group, the largest U.S. manufacturer of firearms, which produced the Bushmaster AR-15-type rifle used in the attack.

Newtown schools - with the exception of Sandy Hook Elementary, the site of the shooting - re-opened to students on Tuesday. On Thursday, school officials said Friday, the last day before the Christmas break, would be a shortened day, rather than a full-length day as originally scheduled.

The town's post office has been overwhelmed with thousands of letters and packages sent by well-wishers.

"We have a lot of experience in the delivery of love," Christine Dugas, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Postal Service, said on CNN.

Little Known Facts About Travel Insurance

i'm on a planeDid you know that out of country group insurance benefits are handled by a 3rd party, not the insurance company supplier? With the holiday season upon us people are planning their winter vacations. Many automatically think about buying travel insurance, while others are satisfied that they are covered by their group insurance plan. So ?it?s all good.? Or is it? What happens if ?

  • you override the emergency medical?s directive or the insurance company denies your claim?

AND

  • the medical emergency involves a critical illness, like a stroke or heart attack that has longer lasting financial ramifications beyond the need to get and pay for immediate care?

When a medical emergency arises it is the 3rd party you deal with when calling the toll free number provided. Their first concern is to stabilize the patient and the second is to get them back to the country of origin as soon as possible. But what if extenuating circumstances or the opinion of the patient or their family is that getting them home a.s.a.p. is not the best course of action right then? A colleague of mine found out the answer to this question when his wife had a stroke in Greece. The answer is you are on your own to cover the costs and then you submit the claim for reimbursement. In his case the bill was for $92,400 US!

Neither you nor your clients want surprises like that, so if Travel Insurance is not your specialty ? find an advisor who does specialize in it so that you are confident that this holiday travel season ?is well covered? with no surprises!

Here?s wishing you and yours a very happy, healthy and safe holiday season!

Police: Man torments girlfriend by killing hamsters

By Juan Ortega, NBCMiami.com

MIAMI -- A Hollywood man has been arrested on charges he sexually battered his girlfriend and tormented her by killing her hamsters, police say.

Joseph Gibbons-Nix, 35, was taken into custody Wednesday on multiple counts of aggravated assault, domestic battery by strangulation, sexual assault and animal cruelty charges, records show.

Gibbons-Nix and his girlfriend have lived together as a couple for seven years, an arrest report said. Gibbons-Nix ?intentionally caused bodily harm and forced [the woman] by threat to engage in sexual activities against her will,? the report said.

He kept demanding oral sex, to which she didn?t agree, said Hollywood police spokesman Sgt. Lester Cochenour.

When she gave in to his demands, he complained that she was ?not doing it right,? and punched her in the head, face and arms, police said. He also bit her twice, the police report said.

The domestic strangulation charges stemmed from the woman?s near-strangulation, police said. She said that her boyfriend several times ?strangled her where her airway was completely blocked and she felt she was going to lose consciousness,? the arrest report said.

Gibbons-Nix also told her that her hamsters were ?ungodly creatures,? the report said.

Carnegie fund mints newest class of heroes

An apartment complex clerk shot in the head. A boy stabbed by knife-wielding men. Teens struggling to stay afloat in the Pacific. An elderly woman trapped in her burning home.

All of them rescued by individuals who risked their own lives to help.

The Carnegie Hero Fund Commission awarded medals for valor to 18 people on Wednesday, including four who perished in their rescue attempts.

Among the honorees is Joshua W. Steed, 20, a college student in Abilene, Texas, who was in the office of an apartment complex on Sept. 7, 2011 when his 21-year-old co-worker, working the front desk, was shot in the head by an assailant with a .38-caliber revolver.

Instead of closing the office door to protect himself, Steed rushed the gunman and threw a chair at him, according to the commission. Then he grabbed the gunman by the arms, rammed him into a wall and threw him to the floor ? getting his gun in the process.

Steed's co-worker survived.

Ione Fletcher Kleven similarly ran toward trouble when she heard a 14-year-old boy screaming for help in her Castro Valley, Calif., neighborhood in 2010.

The 64-year-old portrait artist chased off three men who'd attacked the boy, punching and kicking him and stabbing him twice in the back and once in the stomach. The boy recovered.

Other medal winners are from Illinois, Hawaii, New Jersey, Kansas, Iowa, Arkansas, South Carolina, Florida, Massachusetts and Calgary, Canada. Collectively they saved seven people from drowning, two from burning cars, and one from a burning home. And a police officer in New Brunswick, N.J., climbed over the fence of a railroad trestle to rescue a suicidal woman dangling 25 feet above a street.

Carnegie medalists or their heirs receive financial grants approved by the commission. More than $34.8 million has been awarded to 9,576 honorees since the fund's inception in 1904.

Steel baron Andrew Carnegie was inspired to start the fund after hearing rescue stories from a mine disaster that killed 181 people.

The Pittsburgh-based commission that administers the fund chooses recipients four times a year. The panel provides financial help to medal recipients who were disabled ? or to the dependents of those killed ? by their heroism.

Insulin plus growth factor inhibitor limits vision damage in diabetic mice

Dec. 17, 2012 ? A new therapeutic approach to diabetes that combines insulin and an inhibitor of the epidermal growth factor (EGF) betacellulin could limit the progression of diabetic macular edema (DME), Cleveland Clinic researcher Bela Anand-Apte, MD, PhD, said at the American Society for Cell Biology Annual Meeting, on Dec. 17 in San Francisco.

The study, conducted with insulin-dependent diabetic mice, showed that by thwarting "cross-talk" between insulin and betacellulin (BTC), which promotes the regeneration of pancreatic beta cells that stores and releases insulin, the EGF inhibitor preserved the animals' vascular integrity, she explained.

"These studies suggest that a combinatorial treatment of insulin and EGF inhibition might be a useful therapeutic combination to prevent macular edema, but needs to be determined in people with diabetes," said Dr. Anand-Apte.

Dr. Anand-Apte's idea for disconnecting diabetic progression from retinopathy was suggested by studies in people with type II diabetes whose blood sugar control was no longer stable on oral medications, requiring them to be treated with insulin. She noted that insulin therapy appeared to result in some patients' retinopathy progressing much faster, at least for a time. There was a correlation between starting insulin therapy and developing DME, she said.

Another clue came from an observation made by Judah Folkman, MD, then at Boston Children's Hospital, about pancreatic cancer patients who had undergone a pancreatectomy. Without a pancreas to produce and regulate insulin, these patients developed severe diabetes but rarely if ever developed proliferative retinopathy, even when they survived for more than 10 to 20 years. In the pancreas of people with diabetes, the researchers hypothesized that "cross-talk" occurred between injected insulin and the secretion of a vascular permeability-inducing factor.

Working with collaborators at Case Western Reserve University and the University of Wisconsin, the Anand-Apte lab used a mouse model for diabetes to look at BTC produced in the pancreas by proliferating beta cells. In previous studies, Dr. Anand-Apte had linked BTC to increased vascular permeability in the retina. Treating diabetic mice with insulin produced a spike in levels of a soluble form of betacellulin in the retina. Simply injecting BTC into the vitreous fluid of both hyperglycemic and normal mice also increased vascular permeability.

Looking more closely, the researchers determined that insulin was disrupting tight junctions between retinal pigment cells (RPEs), the barrier layer wrapped around retinal nerves, by driving up BTC expression. Injecting insulin first increased the production of ADAM10, a protein that weakens molecular cell-cell glues. The increase in ADAM10 was followed by up-regulation of BTC. By blocking the production of BTC and ADAM10 with short interfering RNA (siRNA), the researchers discovered they could protect these cell-cell tight junctions.

Substituting a BTC-targeted EGF inhibitor, the researchers finally thwarted the cross-talk between BTC and insulin. The EGF inhibitor preserved vascular integrity in the diabetic mice.

The association of visual impairment and the progression of both type I and type II diabetes appears to strengthen over time. The National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse estimates that of the 25.8 million American who have diabetes, 4.2 million have diabetic retinopathy, and in 675,000 of them, it progresses to its most severe form, proliferative diabetic retinopathy in which abnormal -- and leaky blood vessels intrude into the eyeball's clear vitreous gel, causing retinal traction and bleeding that results in decreased sight.

Many people with diabetes with proliferative retinopathy also develop DME, a thickening of the center of the retina. Increased vascular permeability in the blood-retinal barrier allows leakage of lipoproteins into the macula at the center of the retina, reducing sharp vision. The main risk factors for DME, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, are increasing duration of diabetes, high blood sugar and blood pressure. Over 10 years, 20% of patients diagnosed with early-onset diabetes and 40% with older-onset diabetes will develop DME.

NCAA golf returns to TV with Golf Channel

By Ryan Herrington

Why isn't the NCAA Championship on TV?

It's a question I'd get asked more often than any other from casual golf fans with a curiosity about the college game. It was generally posed more philosophically than literally, where the answer comes down to dollars that didn't make sense for the broadcasting entity.

With the announcement Dec. 17 that the Golf Channel will televise the NCAA men's Division I championship starting in 2014 and the men's and women's championship in 2015, the question of costs remains unclear?there was no reference in the press release detailing the agreement regarding how much the Golf Channel is paying for the rights to broadcast or how it will offset the costs of production.

At this time, however, that doesn't really matter. The more important point is that college golf's biggest event will finally be back on the small screen for the first time since 2000.

"We are committed to covering all facets of the game of golf, and this new partnership with the NCAA will be the centerpiece of our broader commitment to covering the collegiate game," said Golf Channel president Mike McCarley in a press release. "We look forward to introducing our viewers to the future stars of the game and tapping into the tremendous passion collegiate fans have for their schools."

Indeed, in addition to airing the championships?starting with the three days of play from the men's edition at Prairie Dunes CC in Hutchinson, Kan., in 2014?Golf Channel executives say the cable network will provide "comprehensive news coverage on-air and online" about college golf during the school year in a build-up toward the national championship. This is as important to hear as the fact that the championship will be on TV in the first place. That there might be more consistent and regular coverage of college golf from arguably the highest-profile national golf outlet in the country actually might have the bigger impact long term.

While the men will have the sole spotlight in 2014, both the men's and women's D-I tournaments will be aired in 2015, with each championship being held at The Concession GC in Bradenton, Fla. (NCAA officials had not previously announced the site of either championship). It will be the first time that one course will host both D-I championships.?

Such a ? pardon the pun ? concession is one of the ways no doubt that the cost issue is addressed; instead of the expense of setting up cameras at two different courses to cover the two championships, Golf Channel will only have to do it at one.

It's a simple start of a solution to a problem that many in the college golf world weren't certain would ever be solved, including myself. I relish the idea that in the coming years the question "Why isn't the NCAA Championship on TV?" might be replaced with "Can you believe there once was a time when the NCAA Championship wasn't on the Golf Channel?"

Judge, his family beheaded in Ukraine

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) ? Ukrainian law enforcement agencies are investigating the grisly murder of a judge and three family members, who were beheaded in the city of Kharkiv.

Kharkiv Judge Volodymyr Trofimov, 58, his wife, son and the son's girlfriend were found dead in Trofimov's apartment on Saturday. All the bodies had been decapitated and the heads were missing, according to prosecutors and the police.

A prosecutor's spokesman said Monday that investigators believe Trofimov's killing could be connected to his job, because the murder took place on Dec. 15, which is Judge's Day in Ukraine.

Investigators also think the killing could have been the result of a robbery, because some belongings are missing from the apartment, or a contract murder.

No further details were available Monday.

Telecoms in the U.S. Have Held Broadband Internet Access ...

Here are the facts: Approximately 19 million Americans can?t subscribe to high-speed internet access because they live in areas that private companies believe are too expensive to serve. Internet access is still very expensive compared to the rest of the developed world ? a third of Americans don?t or can?t subscribe.

Via Wired:

Internet access in America remains relatively slow ? particularly when it comes to upload speeds, the very feature necessary for cloud computing and creating user-generated content. Cable companies dominate wired internet access and face no real competition or pricing pressure; telcos like Verizon and AT&T have retreated to wireless, which will never be a full substitute for wired capacity; and we still have no plan for a nation-wide upgrade to fiber.

Congress created the FCC to make available to ?all the people of the United States? a ?rapid, efficient, Nation-wide? communications service ?at reasonable charges.? But we have failed in that task when it comes to the basic communications need of our time: high-speed internet access. Reliable information access is central to every policy we care about, including education, health, and even national security.

How bad is it? Here?s a graphic to put it into some perspective.

Watch: President Obama talks about Connecticut school shooting ...

WASHINGTON ? A tearful President Barack Obama said Friday he grieved first as a father about the massacre at a Connecticut elementary school, declaring, ?Our hearts are broken today.? He called for ?meaningful action? to prevent such shootings but did not say what it should be.

?The majority of those who died were children ? beautiful, little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old,? Obama said.

At that point he had to pause for several seconds to keep his composure, and he wiped his eyes.

The scene in the White House briefing room was one of the most emotional moments of Obama?s presidency. Near him, two senior aides cried and held hands as they listened to the president.

Some 27 people, including 20 children, were killed when a gunman opened fire inside the school. The shooter blasted his way through the building as young students cowered helplessly. The dead included the shooter.

The story jolted parents and other people across the nation, and the White House was no different.

Obama began his comments with no greeting. He ended them with words of Scripture, walking away in silence.

He recited the future milestones lost, and had to pause again to gather his words.

?They had their entire lives ahead of them ? birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own,? the president said of those who were killed.

He ordered that U.S. flags be flown at half-staff on public grounds through Tuesday.

As the president received briefings about the shooting, his spokesman, Jay Carney, responded to questions about gun control and Obama?s campaign promises on the matter by saying ?I don?t think today is that day? for such a discussion.

Others, however, said it was.

?If now is not the time to have a serious discussion about gun control and the epidemic of gun violence plaguing our society, I don?t know when is,? Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y. said in a statement.

The president himself signaled a desire for action, but he was not specific.

?As a country, we have been through this too many times,? Obama said. ?We?re going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics.?

During Obama?s time in office, mass shootings have shaken communities in Wisconsin, Texas and Colorado.

The latest attack comes less than two weeks before Christmas. It appeared to be the nation?s second-deadliest school shooting, exceeded only by the Virginia Tech massacre in 2007.

Obama spoke from the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room, named in 2000 in honor of the former White House press secretary, James Brady, who was shot and disabled in the assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan in 1981. Brady and his wife, Sarah, have become activists for gun control.

The president and his wife, Michelle, have two daughters.

?Michelle and I will do what I know every parent in America will do, which is hug our children a little tighter,? he said. ?But there are families in Connecticut who cannot do that tonight, and they need all us of right now.?

The president pledged support to Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy.

Said Obama: ?He will have every single resource that he needs to investigate this heinous crime.?

More similar than they think: Liberals and conservatives exaggerate perceived moral views

More similar than they think: Liberals and conservatives exaggerate perceived moral views

Thursday, December 13, 2012

Moral stereotypes about "typical" liberals and conservatives held by both groups are generally correct, but exaggerated both for their own group and the other, according to new research published December 12 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by Jesse Graham at the University of Southern California and his colleagues at the University of Virginia and New York University.

The researchers asked 2,212 U.S participants to answer questions about moral beliefs either with their own views, or with their idea of a typical liberal or conservative person's answers. They found that liberals endorsed individualistic moral concerns of compassion and fairness more than conservatives, and conservatives endorsed group-focused concerns such as loyalty and respect for authority. Across the political spectrum, participants' responses correctly reflected the moral endorsements of "typical" liberals and conservatives, but increased the extremity of the views. The authors found that these perceived stereotypes exaggerated the moral ideologies of both the respondent's own group as well as that of the other group, and that liberals were least accurate about the views held by both groups.

Graham explains, "Rather than finding that liberals think conservatives are immoral, and conservatives think the same about liberals, we found that all three groups shared exaggerated moral stereotypes about partisans on either side. These moral stereotypes were basically that liberals don't care at all about loyalty, authority, and sanctity, and that conservatives don't care at all about compassion, fairness, and equality. The findings suggest that liberals and conservatives, while differing systematically in their moral worldviews, are actually more similar in their moral judgments than anyone thinks."

A study has found that over 75% of digital coins in the Bitcoin currency are being stashed not spent. Bitcoin is a company using cryptography and peer-to-peer networking to enable anonymous payments online and is often used as a digital payment method for online gamers and gamblers. The online digital currency is in large part remaining unused in dormant accounts that have never participated in outgoing transactions. Dorit Ron, a mathematician who worked on the report said they followed180,000 transactions trails across 3.12 million accounts

?This means that there are much fewer BTCs in circulation than previously presumed. Yet, the total number of Bitcoins participating in all the transactions since the establishment of the system (except for the actual minting operations) is 423,287,950 BTCs. This implies that each coin which is in circulation had to be moved a much larger than expected number of times.?
